    EXCELLENT MUSEUM!!
This is an excellent museum. The building itself retains many features from its former use, and appears to have been modified or changed very little. Each display room is very well laid out and overall it 'flows' well. There is so much information (over 3 floors) which is easy to read. The outdoor WW1 trench reconstructions are excellent. Information on local casualties from Co Cavan is so sad. It is well worth the journey to Ballyjamesduff to visit this superb museum.

    Fantastic museum
Fantastic museum giving an insight into all aspects of Irish history. What was interesting is that it covers both the 1916 choice between first world war service or the rebellion. Also stories of the famine in Cavan. A real eye-opener to Irish history. Highly recommend.

    An amazing museum
What an amazing museum. They have covered so much with fantastic displays and such a lot of information covering so much of Ireland's history. There was an exhibition about successful Irish women which added to the experience. It was the definitely the best museum I have been to and I have been to many!

    Great Summer Day Trip!
Myself & 3 kids 9,10 & 12 went to the museum today as my son had been with his school a few months previous & wanted to go again...(great sign, he's 12!) So we all went down, met the grandparents & made a day of it. We are from Cavan, so as with all locals, we had never been. I have to say it was a great day out for adults & kids alike. The trenches were so well done & so informative. If you like history, you'll love this. Even if history is not your thing, it's still very interesting to see. Inside the house there is so much to see about all our local history. The staff are lovely & very helpful. There is a lift if you can't do the stairs so very accessible. There is even a small cafe if you'd like a wee cup of tea or coffee. All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience!!

Was not sure what to expect but expectation were exceeded. Housed in a former monastery I believe, the museum is spread out over 3 floors. The exhibits cover a variety of topics and details how Cavan individuals were involved / affected etc.

Outside the main building is a mock GPO building that details the 1916 Rising. There is also a WW1 trench. However, due to really bad weather this was shut the day I visited. There also looked to be a small playpark for kids.

Admission is only €6 for adult and is worth a couple of hours if in area.

We found out about this museum while staying local to Ballyjamesduff but what a bit of luck as we were blown away by the number and quality of the exhibits over three floors and across the peaceful garden and outside space.

On arrival we were greeted by a very pleasant and well informed lady whose explanation of the layout and options greatly helped us maximise our few hours on site. We actually spent three hours including a short break to enjoy an excellent coffe and scone but even double that amount of time still wouldn't do justice to this superb facility.
Cavan County Museum is about much more than local history although that in itself is outstanding but the contribution of its people, men and women in Irish history and around the world was a real eye opener for us.

There are far too many highlights to even start outlining them so if you are anywhere within an hour or two from Ballyjamesduff this will be a really well spent day that you won't forget.

We are a couple with origins in Counties Dublin & Monaghan and our review is completely independent 👌

What a find on a gorgeous day, our 10 year loves history and we found this off the beaten tracks.. honestly the reviews don’t give this justice.. the 3 floors are filled with interesting facts and features and the gardens a delight but the highlight which is a must for anyone interested in world war 1 is the outdoor replica trenches.. the peace garden is heavenly and the history especially around the 1916 rising is outstanding. credit where it’s due this was an amazing afternoon and would highly recommend any schools to drop by

Came across this when looking for points of interest around Cavan.
It turned out to be a most enjoyable afternoon, and could have done with more time as there is so much to see in the Museum
A converted convent with 3 floors of interesting exhibits for a wet day.
The peace garden and WW1 trench were also enjoyable as it was a beautiful day.
Only downside was the coffee shop had limited food offering. Perhaps a salad or quiche or soup and brown bread could be enough.

Really enjoyed this fascinating small museum. The outdoor exhibit of world war 1 trenches and the Easter rising was excellent. I particularly liked the reflective space.
indoors the vinaigrettes of individual stories of emigration over the years was very well done
Good value for money

We decided to visit this museum after seeing a leaflet in our a hotel. It is tucked away in the small town of Ballyjamesduff but with our satnav it was easy enough to find. There are three floors of artifacts in the main building and interesting historical information about the history of CountyCavan Outside there is also a WWI trench, a small garden and a mock GPO building with further history and more artifacts. The staff were lovely and friendly and we were very impressed with it all. Highly recommended and not expensive

This is a museum you must visit. The WW1 trench is fabulous and the first time I ever experienced a trench, the horror of war.
All the exhibits are are really interesting and the section about women was an eye opener. I think I took more away from here than any other museum I’ve ever visited.
The grounds and building are beautiful and a great playground for children.

This place is worth travelling to from wherever you are in Ireland. Set in an imposing three story historic building, the Cavan museum experience brings you on a journey through Ireland's past. The particular concentration on 20th century history, and Irish men and women's experience of WW1 is outstanding. You can walk through recreated trenches, complete with uniforms, food and medical care and imagine what Somme life was like. While the museum addresses each phase of Irish life, the overall experience leaves one feeling a little sad, and full of empathy for the suffering and difficult times endured by the Irish. We spent 4 hours there and loved it.

The Cavan County Museum left one scurrying for new superlatives.
A true gem nestling in the heart of Drumlin country.
The exhibits ...indoor and outdoor were just quite superb.
The staff were more than helpful and the whole experience was simply a joy.
