We just love this place. Great exhibits and gardens. Lovely helpful people. Good coffee in secluded garden. Great view of the Tamar bridges.

The whole experience was excellent, from the house and the artifacts to the gardens and the staff. It was very interesting and the lady on the day was very knowledgeable. We had a lovely cup of tea and cake outside in the courtyard and even though it rained we still stayed dry under the umbrellas .

Out of the way, and easy to miss, this has more to offer. the staff are passionate about the history of the building. A beautiful garden in an amazing setting above the river Tamar. A lovely spot to sit and have a tea, coffee, or cream tea.

very nice garden to sit in and enjoy a cream tea. They also do other things there such as having your cards read about the future.

The first warm, sunny weekend since I can't remember when, so what better way to spend the afternoon than having a cream tea in the garden at Mary Newman's Cottage which is now open for the season. The garden is slowly springing back to life, lovely primroses and green shoots of perennials and herbs in the borders. The gold finches are twittering away in the trees and the sound of boats humming along the Tamar drift up from below. There are few places in Saltash to have a relaxing experience without feeling like you have outstayed your welcome. A great place for a moment of meditation without interruption or, a chat with other visitors over the chink of bone china cups. Probably the best kept secret in Saltash. The fruit trees should be full of blossom in a week or two so I shall go again.

If like us you are interested in the Elizabethan era then a visit to Mary Newmans cottage is a must do.
Small, but very interesting and a lovely cup of tea and a scone with jam and cream rounded off the visit nicely.

This charming cottage is well worth a visit. Displays of artifacts from Elizabethan times are enhanced by knowledgeable local guides, along with an informational video. The well tended gardens to the rear show off local fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers. Cream teas or other refreshments round off a very pleasant experience.

On Saturday 17th June 2017, My husband and I visited Saltash to visit Mary Newman's Cottage.
Mary Newman’s Cottage is a Grade II listed cottage and is the oldest intact building in Saltash, dating from around 1480, and was the home of Mary Newman, the first wife of Sir Frances Drake. The Elizabethan furniture and utensils give the interior of the cottage a truly atmospheric feel, with is display of herbs and spices in the homely kitchen. There is a display detailing the renovation of the house back to its Elizabethan state from when it was converted in the mid 1970’s. Visitors can try on Elizabethan period clothes, which helps get a real feel of what it was like back then and adds to the feel of slipping back in time.
Outside, an Elizabethan garden has been created which showcases the plants and herbs vital for a household of that period. The scent of the herbs and flowers were quite intoxicating and we sat and relaxed in this lovely garden and enjoyed the magnificent view across the River Tamer. It was such an inspiring little garden that I wrote a poem here called ‘Mary’s Magical Home’.
There was also an area with pretty pale blue tables and chairs, where one could partake of refreshments. My husband and I decided to avail ourselves of this and My husband had a large pot of tea and I had a lovely chilled fruit juice as it was such a hot sunny and lovely day. We spent about three hours here as there was much to take in as well as sitting and relaxing in this lovely garden and we took some lovely photographs.
