Has potential to be a beautiful island.
Beaches are beautiful but the whole place needs a massive clean up. There’s so much rubbish as soon as you come off the beaches which is such a shame. Some of the hotels are slowly getting upgraded which is great to see. The fire shows on the beach at night are great, and there are plenty of options to eat. It’s ok for a one or two night visit but anything more I would head further and visit Koh Chang, which in my opinion is much nicer and cleaner.

    What might have been?
Tricky making these comments as a foreigner visiting for a few nights. Clearly a lot of business and employment on island, but feels strange as place is a national park. Very enjoyable beaches in some places, but rubbish is a big problem, not being tackled very well. Simple signs about plastic use and waste would be a start. Speedboats and motorbikes? Why not promote bicycles, walking and slower boat travel. I enjoyed my stay, but was a little frustrated about how much better the island could be.

Close to Bangkok - app. 2 drive
App. 2h30 drive from Bangkok it seems to be the closest beach town. Rayong looks very quiet with a beach filled with huge trees for shade. But onto koh samet with a slow boat. The island best to explore by bike. Many cute beach cafes and accommodation as well as very high end, exquisite resorts. Was only there for a few hours, but would definitely visit again. It felt busy but not that commercial. I think it might be a good alternative to the other more visited islands.

Koh Samet - Tropical paradise with stunning views
Koh Samet a beautiful island around Rayong province. View : Koh Samet has this gorgeous beach surrounded by forest greens and small boulders with clear water and calm waves. It’s less to decent populated mostly family, couples etc. if you want to be lost in nature and not get disturbed by noisy people or clubs then this is for you: If you want to tan in peace and read a book this is for you. If you want your kids to make mud castles this is for you: If you like taking small forest adventure to discover this place’s true beauty this is for you. This also has a selfie zone with a humongous statue of a deity I think (no offence I don’t know). There is no paid water adventure hence there will be no salesman after you arse (I hate that) It’s about 78 kms from Central mall of Pattaya (2-3 hours incl. pit stops). We hired a cab for the day. How to reach : Once you reach the spot, you need to buy tickets for the ferry (water jet) that will take you to the island. Once you reach the island you need to buy tickets for the tuk tuk (they either take you to your hotel or 3 scenic view destination). Hotels: There are hotels pretty much budget priced and not so good quality I think for stay. (I’ve not stayed the night so cannot comment).

We cut our stay at this location (Sai Kaew beach) short (did not even want a refund).
It is a truly invaded tourist trap where the majority visiting culture(s) show no respect to the Thai hospitality or to the other (minority) visiting cultures.
It is also sad to witness that tourism is destroying a piece of land that is registered as National Park. There is trash everywhere on the island which suggests that the impact of tourist (trash) cannot be handled. The mass tourism also caused every restaurant to copy each other’s tourist menus…no variety whatsoever. The fire shows…same as the restaurants; when you see one you have seen them all. Not to mention the competing loud music on parts of the beach.
The weekend will be topping your experience when you are breathing gasoline fumes from the large numbers of (speed) boats bringing even more of the same day tourist to the island…..

With the national park charging 200bhat per person and 100s of people visiting the island a day, that’s a lot of $ . Zero goes back into the island, the big cats at national park, owning big houses and cars, yet the island is like a dump site, trash, plastic, stray dogs, my partner is a vet and offered to come with x2 nurses, to neuter, and treat six dogs, all meds and services for free! She was told you need to pay to do this ;) fools. Island is a construction site, walk any beach and the trash is visible. Puss hole. Just need to employ 50 people to clean the island daily, bam plastic, and nuetur stray dogs.

Accommodations was amazing and clean. Not far a way from the pier. The room is very spacious and when open the balcony room was big.

How things have changed for the worse. What used to be a lovely island with intimate bars and restaurants is now completely destroyed.

The masses of rude and unruly tourists is overwhelming; as a result most of the locals are now quite hostile now towards everyone.

The beaches remain beautiful but sadly that is all that remains unspoilt.
