Nice little museum but in Spanish, translated by our Cuba guide Criolla, a small local agency with driver in an American car, this museum on the Battle of Pig Bay is the first rout suffered by the USA on Latin American soil. A short film concludes the visit, nothing engaging. This museum was wanted and founded by Fidel Castro. Coming to Cuba without seeing it would be a bit limiting...

Great museum! Outside there are several tanks and an airplane on display that helped defeat the counter-revolutionaries, financed and trained by the USA. Inside there are also very exciting things on display, and at the beginning you are shown an interesting and educational video.

Ok you get shuttled back in time there’s a kinda Sovjet approach of the tourists that enter.
Line up and behave. You find yourself in a room with a old televison but .. none the less you get impressed by what happend here : the overwhelming CIA arrogance the smartness and bravery of Fidel and his compagnons some not older then 16. It ‘s all here with a revolutionary sauce.

The Bay of Pigs was one of the highlights of our trip to Cuba and the museum at Playa Giron did not disappoint. We paid the 2CUC entry and then an extra 1 CUC to watch a documentary, which is screened in a seperate auditorium dressed all over with weird 1970s curtaining (!). The 15min documentary is in Spanish with English subtitles and was an excellent introduction to the Cuban history of the Bay of Pigs Invasion. As other reviewers have noted, the museum is entirely in Spanish but you can work out what's happening even with only very basic language skills. The human stories of those who fought (and died) with Castro were touching and emphasised the determination of the locals to repel the Cuban-American forces. There is a wealth of information and photos in the museum which we've not seen published elsewhere.

This museum tells the Revolution's side of the Bay of Pigs story. The photos and memorabilia are interesting. However, if you read Spanish well, you may be a bit taken aback. Virtually all the information is highly inflammatory anti-American propaganda. Now I actually do see the Cuban side of the attack, but still, it's a little unnerving to read about the "cowardly mercenary murderers who hide behind the myth of God" ruthlessly killing innocents. It definitely wouldn't sit well with conservatives and even rubbed me the wrong way a bit. Not exactly an objective presentation of the facts. But interesting.

Being a US citizen, the views our government has regarding the embargo and the revolution are obviously different than the Cuban perspective. So this museum was very interesting to me, as there are many aspects of the revolution and the Bay of Pigs (Playa Giron, or "Beach of Heroes" as they call it) that I didn't know about! Definitely worthwhile to walk through, although it would be difficult for something who has no knowledge of spanish to understand. We had someone in our group who could translate for us so that was helpful.

Most of you reading this review are probably too young to have first hand information of this event. In a nutshell: JFK was not too happy that Fidel Castro was setting up a communist camp right under his nose. The CIA sold the idea to Kennedy that the cubans are not happy with the Castro regime, that will fall during the first hours of an invasion. The CIA also said that they can assemble an invasion force from exile Cubans from a relatively low budget and equip and train them. The CIA gave outdated equipment to the assembled exil Cuban force, gave them a mediocre training. For a good measure someone also told Castro that he is going to have uninvited visitors. So on invasion day Castro was present and ready and with a handful of WW2 soviet arms he destroyed the invaders or took them prisoners. Some people say that JFK's assassination was directly linked to the Bay of Pigs fiasco.

Interesting to see the Cuban story behind this famous story. The short film is worth paying extra to see.

This museum remembers the disastrous 1961 invasion of Cuba by the USA. Cuba's successful defence of their country made them heroes, particularly amongst Central and South American nations. The 'incident' also played a massively important role in the development of the Cold War and directly led to the Cuban missile crisis. The museum itself won't provide this depth or scope of history but instead focuses entirely on the counter revolutionary nature of the invasion and its direct threat and challenge to the recently victorious Fidel Castro. Lots of anti-imperialist propaganda as you'd expect and various Russian tanks, used in the combat, are exhibited. Fascinating and political.

It's an interesting little place and the pictures of the men who died and some of their items is harrowing, but it's difficult to take it all in when there's quite so much propoganda. Apparently the people of the each continent (insert communist regime here) came out onto the streets to celebrate the first ever defeat of Yankee Imperialism.

Si sólo vas al museo un día es más que suficiente. La gran atracción de Playa Girón (y Playa Larga) es el buceo, si te gusta puedes estar más días.
