Our guide Oreste was great. Very friendly and knowledgeable. The kids had fun and thought the cave was really neat to visit. A great way to cool down on a hot summer day and learn some interesting facts. Highly recommend if in the area.

Beautiful spot and caves are fascinating with all the stalactites and stalagmites. Only disappointment, don't arrive early. The place opens at 10:30 am but first tour at 11:30 am and nothing to do but wait. Our guide was not very interested in giving us a tour except to walk us thru the caves. He did not speak any English and gave us a piece of paper with details from the caves. This should not have been a problem as my husband and brother are fluent in Italian as was another couple on the tour. Yet nothing. Only answered questions when asked with minimal response. Too bad as we would have appreciated at least some explanation of the parts of the cave.

The caves themselves are very interesting and the caves' past history is interesting also. We learned of the caves through friends, whose parents used them in WW II as a shelter from the war. Humans have used the caves as far back as 3000 years.
Our excellent guide, Oreste explained that the caves have been evolving for the past 2 million years. He showed us many of the formations that were over a million years old. The section available to tourists is only 200 meters long but gives many excellent examples of the many structures inside the cave. In addition to the stalactites and stalagmites, there is an active bat colony inside. Not to worry, they stay to themselves on the ceiling (no flash pictures should keep them there).
The park has done a great job in making the cave tourist friendly with many handrails and excellent walking surfaces. You have to duck down to get through some of the pathways, so if you suffer from claustrophobia, you may want to think about this.
Excellent tour. The tour is in Italian but a written English description of each room is available.

But I would not drive to it more than 50 km, to be honest.
1. It is many much more beatiful caves in a world, this one is really ordinary
2. Guide speaks absolutely nothing other than Italien, the man in the ticket "buro" too
3.No info that visits are in set hours, you get down there with you ticket, and if you lucky, guide would scream something in italian, with some more luck you'll understand that you have to get out and wait some more!
4. Guide in the cave just walks with the flashlight, saying nothing,at some points just show with the hand,go there or there, than we all would go and she stayed and waited for us, no use at all from such guide, I think
5.For 9 euro each ticket, they could of at least printed out some info in english at least and give you a plane of the cave, organisation=0!

I visited the grotte di Pastena Tuesday 4th of October 2016 with a family group, our guide was Davide, he was extremely knowledgeable about the grotte by pointing out intresting feuters on the cave walls, dates and facts.
Davide is a volunteer guide, he explained that in Italy because of the administrative high salaries, there is no money left to give guides some sort of wages.

The grottes are very large and very interesting; stalactites and stalagmites are very larges coming for billions of years !
Access to the grotte is very easy; I used to visit grottes all over the word, and these are one of the best.

We visited the Grotte with my family last weekend. I had a vague souvenir from my childhood and I did not expect such a fantastic experience. The place is so magical and interesting, with all its history and the scientific aspects. Daughter aged 10 literally amazed to have the chance to go under earth! Big thanks to the guides who explains everything in details and with extreme kindness. Really worth the visit!

Just some foreword: if you have problems in caves or very cramped spaces, in case you have heart/lung problems just don't go. It's not for you (but it is written on the welcome sign to the caves, once you get there). Be also careful to phone in advance: problems with personnel may make you wait for one hour and more to enter, so call before you come to get sure about the timing of the visits.
After quite some travel from Rome the caves are a bit far away in the hills southeast of the city (some 100km). Get sure you have a decent map or a GPS, even though the signposts for the caves from the A1 highway exit are numerous and easy to follow. I would invite you also to get some translation, because the guides speak only Italian. My family and I (my wife, myself and two kids 9 and 6-yr old) arrived there in a searing sunny afternoon (+34C in the shadow), to get in a waaay cooler huge antechamber of the grotta. The guide was very professional and gave a good account on what everything was about: history, geology and some stories about the discovery of the caves (as I said: better you speak Italian or have a good translator handy - I mean a person, not one of those iPhone/Android contraptions: they just won't work...). After that, it is a continuous walk inside Mother Earth, among laces and curtains of rock carved by centuries of water dripping on the walls and from the ceilings. Great the Blue Lake near the end of the visit (it is actually dark gray-green, though... but impressive).
Should you have time to spare this can be a great afternoon.

this was a great little find. I followed the signs and found the place with no issues. My GPS would like find the address. But it all worked out. Plenty of parking as well, free! The ticket for the Grotte will also get you into the small museum in the town as well. We did not go due to time, we finished to late. I would also recommend taking the back roads, nice peaceful drive. The guide we had did not speak much English but he had a paper that explained what each place was. would bring a small flashlight if you have one. Also bring correct change if you can to pay.
