We have been to some of the villages on the Cinque Terre before but not by boat, so this time we decided that a boat trip would provide a different perspective. We arrived at the harbour in Viareggio at 8:40 in order to allow enough time to board. Wasn’t able to book in advance so just turned up on the day we wanted. The tours set off at 9am sharp every day & run all summer until first week of Sept. We chose to sit on the top deck (uncovered) but you can sit below deck if you prefer. The boat stopped at 2 other harbours before making its way to Portovenere where the boat stopped for just over an hour. This is a lovely village & there is enough time to explore & get a gelato. Back on board we travelled along the Cinque Terre where the boat kindly moved closer to the villages to allow photo opportunities, before stopping at Monterosso for nearly 3 hours. We had time for a good look round & also a tasty meal. Boat took us back to Viareggio for about 6pm. We found it to be a very relaxing trip & we had a good view throughout. Would recommend.

Firstly this is not cheap, but it does provide a wonderful way to view Cinque Terre from the sea. The ferry only runs around every hour so it would be difficult to cover the area in a day using this service. We used the train to visit Manarola (which currently the ferry is unable to access) and Riomaggiore. The trains are frequent and cheaper but then for our return to Monterosso we took the ferry and sat out the back for some great photos. The trip was good and doing it this way was the most economical though the return train trip would have been cheaper. If you want to experience the area by boat, save money and time and do it in the return leg.

We wanted to see Cinque Terre from the sea and visit Porto Venere at the same time. We bought daily tickets as we were hoping to use the service to travel between the different villages throughout the day. After buying expensive tickets (35€ pp cash-only!), we managed to board on the first ferry of the day at Monterosso. That's where our luck ended : we tried multiple times to use the service throughout the day but even after waiting 30+ mins for boarding we couldn't board as the ferries were already full. They basically sell as many tickets as they can without any regards to boarding capacity or quality of service... To top it off, the confusing timetables and lack of information meant that we were far from being the only ones unhappy and confused by the service, judging by the other people's comments heard in the queue...

Some of the neg reviews of this service make it seem like we weren’t on the same boat! Our experience was 5 star all the way. We boarded mid morning at Porto Venere and took the boat all the way to Monterosso al Mare. The boat wasn’t busy at all (this was the third departure of the day). Stops were well announced and the crew didn’t waste any unnecessary time between towns loading or unloading.. We were super impressed with the equipment. Every surface was shiny and clean, freshly painted and well maintained-including the two spotless bathrooms. Disembarking was fast, efficient and easy minus the Italians who don’t queue-they just stand next to you looking to nudge you out of their way and over take you. To be expected.. Our return was a bit more crowded and there were several large tour groups onboard but overall, still plenty of seating and space for everyone. We found this to be the most pleasant and scenic way to travel between the Cinque Terre with the added bonus of the pretty views of the towns from the water. Value wise, the ticket cost doesn’t pencil as well unless you take advantage of all the stops. Also, if you want to visit Corniglia, it must be by train.

The return from.Lerici to Monterosso was purchases for €27each but on the return leg they dropped us in La Spezia..they said we hadn't heard them say get off in Portovenere and change boats. They claimed we were the only people who hadn't done this...and being English we believed them...till we got to the bas stop and found a French family with a small child and an Italian couple...they lied...to few people to continue to Leirci so at 6pm on a Sunday evening they abandoned us in La Spezia...very very poor service
