The altarpiece La Madonna dell Misericordia is here; it's just beautiful. And very well presented. Piero della Franchesca is a wonderful artist and you'll get to see it here and locally without crowds. And the local restaurants are great too.

We visited the Museo with a group of students from America. The museum had some great paintings, but the star of the show were the paintings by Piero Della Francesco, and the ceramics by Della Robia.

There are but three reasons to visit this sad, dreary museum, but boy, what reasons!

1.Piero della Francesca's fresco, "The "Resurrection," named by Aldous Huxley in a 1925 essay as the "Greatest Painting in the World." (It may be.)

2. Piero's frescoed head of Saint Julian.

3. And Piero's "La Madonna della Misecordia."

Two other items of note: The Museo Civico is a ten minute's walk from ample and inexpensive parking (hard to find in Italy). It's also a five minute walk from arguably the town's best restaurant, Da Ventura.

A beautiful small museum containing 2 of the best paintings in the world, in a small town with very few visitors.

The Resurrection of Christ is spellbinding. The museum often has the window open so it is visible even when the museum is shut. It is worth going to the Duomo which has a couple of other pictures of this scene which helps put the picture in context.

I found the Madonna della Misericordia most moving, a rare preservation of the whole altarpiece together rather than just the main panel and an opportunity to see what the works would have looked like as originally intended.

Wonderful museum in a lovely small town.

It is certainly easier to get to than in 1925, and is worth the trip to this charming little town. Seeing this painting 'in situ' is amazing.

Not for nothing did A Huxley call this "the best painting in the world" You could sit and stare at it all day.

Piero della Francesca's Resurrection of Christ is simply magical and spellbinding! The museum contains a couple of other Pieros too and there is also a great little painting which depicts Sansepolcro in the 14th century complete with all its towers, the remnants of which can still be spied on a walk around the town.

This little museum contains the best picture in the world, and it is not just me that thinks that! Aldous Huxley started this idea and was his opinion that saved it during the second world war.
The town is a delight, especially at night when the Main Street becomes a wonderful curved living room with shops.

I confess that I've never learned to appreciate 15th century religious art and since that is the main feature of this Museum it wasn't really for me. The works by Piero della Francesco are clearly important but I didn't warm to them. Sorry I'm just a philistine I guess. The building itself is quite impressive and the rooms containing the artworks are spacious and well lit.

The Civic Museum has fabulous displays of art and every thing is clearly labelled. There are wonderful mosaics from a deconsecrated church to be seen on the top floor but these could easily be missed as the signpost is fairly obscure.
If there is no time to view the whole museum one can view its most famous painting from the top of the flight of steps next to the tourist office building.
