Charming church housing beautiful carvings and frescoes. You need to look carefully at every piece to fully appreciate it’s beauty and it’s connection with the surrounding country eg the fruits and plants and vegetables and animals. Highly recommended. Free access.

Construction started in 1691 on the site of a former church and it was designated a Minor Basilica in 1948. The exterior is a lesson in Baroque architecture. The lower and upper portions of the façade are separated by highly decorated balustrade, which on March 20 was undergoing renovation. The entry portal is covered in scaffolding, but is flanked by two screw-fluted columns. Above the entry door is a statue of Saint Dominic. Two niches house statues of St. John the Baptist and Blessed Francis. On either corner of the building at street level are to plinth’s one of which holds a statue of St. Thomas of Aquinas. It was not open on the day we visited

The church was a renovation site but tale a walk around the church which extends beyond Porto Rudiae and you will find it enclosed by high walls but you can see its size. behind the church outside of the old town you will see some majestic old private houses.

The profusion of amazing architectural achievements in Lecce is so profound and varied almost overwhelmingly that a Basilica di San Giovanni Battista-so outstanding a structure- doesn't get the isolated attention it truly deserves. Lecce needs a full week as a base to begin to be appreciated.

I cannot even imagine what it would be like trying to engage this incredible town for but a day trip. Walk into a church of this calibre and be prepared to be overwhelmed. How is this possible AGAIN and AGAIN? The details are hypnotic and compelling. We decided, with over two dozen centrally located churches to do no more than three a day so as to avoid overexposure to the emblazoning light each provides in one way or another.

San Giovanni is a must see in a cornucopia of similarly fascinating structural options that is only a portion of the varied wonders of wonderful Lecce! We've done a considerable amount in wonderful Puglia and would not wish another base of operations for a week.

This building is just one of many attractive ones in Lecce, and one of several churches. It is full of artectural detail and almost incredible precision in the sculpturing both inside and outside. Well worth a visit.

Lecce seems to have a beautiful church on almost every corner - I think there are 26 in the centre alone - but this is one of the best, with superb stone carvings and paintings. Definitely one of the best places to start your tour of the city!

The church is centrally located and there are quite a lot of visitors.
But you can see it at ease because it is not very crowded.
I liked a lot some altars inside.
