One of the most beautiful interiors I have ever seen
Jul 2021
Let's face it, every town in Sicily boasts at least one cathedral along with numerous other beautiful churches. It's so easy to become jaded by ornate images. The exterior of this Norman creation looks more like a castle or fort so I had no expectations about the interior. You have to acquire tickets for admission at an office at the base of the tower prior to entry.

Upon entering this church, I was simply blown away by the colors and the ornamentation. Others may disagree, but there was something magical about this place that held my interest and completely mesmerized me. I say this after seeing the bodacious interior of the cathedral at Monreale.

I did not have a lot of time to drink in the splendor here, but even so, the mark it left on me will never be forgotten. Every time I walk into a Home Depot and see the cheap crap and fixtures that are sold for home design, I will harken back to this place and think of the days when craftsman actually applied their talents to art and architecture. I truly believe this church has one of the most beautiful interiors I have ever witnessed. Do not miss this place while in Erice.

Probably the most interesting Church in Erice
Sep 2019
It is located Immediately at your left after entering Porta Trapani, which is the gate you'll take when getting out the Funiculari-Cable Car (the preferred way to go to this village)
This Church is not in the same league, or even close to the other Cathedrals, Churches or Duomos in Italy and looks definitely modest, more like the Duomo of Taormina , but still it remains probably one of the more interesting places pieces to see in Erice.
From outside it doesn't look really special, but if you go inside you'll discover a beautiful place.

Beautiful interior
Sep 2019
Build in the local stone in C14th, the duomo looks quite plain from the outside but it is beautiful inside - it's situated very near to Porta Trapani. The lace-patterned ceiling is most unusual and quite stunning and there is a lovely rose window. You have to pay to enter but you can get a combined ticket that allows you entry to the next-door tower and several other churches which is good value.

Very interesting place to visit Erice.
Very high up in the clouds with excellent views on a clear day, usually plenty of cloud though.

Narrow streets
Sep 2018
Erice is a lot of fun to wander in. The Matrice Church is the first thing we saw after arriving. I like the fort like architecture. I particularly liked the story about how parishioners with a bit too much sin, had to worship from outside the church. That way everyone entering the church knew that they had been bad that week.

Beautiful inside

From the main entry gate the church is located at the end of the first street on the left. While the outside of the church is not very inspiring the inside is beautiful. Ornate ceilings, beautiful artworks. There is an admission charge.

This church was built in XIV century using stones from Temple of Venus. Very good view from the bell tower.

Tranquility and wonderful ceilings to admire
Sep 2016 • Couples
This wonderful 'Mother Church' is my favourite of the many beautiful churches one can visit for a small fee in Mount Erice. It was constructed in the fourteenth century with a Romanesque exterior. If you arrive in the morning when the clouds are still hanging over the mount, it has incredible atmosphere as the tower ascends into the clouds. Inside it is breath-taking - being SO white and tranquil. It has incredibly elaborate ceiling carvings. As a whole this church provides an assortment of artistic and architectural styles ranging through Arab and Norman, Gothic to neo-Gothic, yet the whole 'blends' into a wonderfully positive experience. Not to be missed!

Jul 2016 • Business
The castles in Erice don't show much at the moment, but the churches are great and this one together with San Giuliano is probably the nicest.
