We spent one night here on our way from Benevento to Florence. Bolsena is a small town that offers swimming and boating on its huge lake in conjunction with its historic district and medieval fort.

The medieval section is on the hill above the town. It is compact, very nice and very clean. There is also a small castle and a separate visitor center with museum.

What seems to be a little medieval town in Italy turns out to be a real gem full of history and lots to see. You have to be quite fit if you want to walk up to the castle as its quite a steep walk...More

We enjoyed the town and did not see many tourists - not a busy place, but lovely. Loved the shopping, and the bakeries and cafes!
