For my husband and I it was all about the view from this area. We did not pay to go inside. We just enjoyed it from the outside.

Out to Lunch! I’ve given this two stars for amusement value. Turn up at 4pm on a Saturday ( should be open till 8) Local police man present plus other staff, however informed that the lady who operates the ticket office is out to lunch and no idea when she will be back. No one to take our 4 euros each as of course nobody else could possibly step in. People being turned away constantly. So no exploring the Fortezza for us today but it was amusing!

The size of this fortress affords expansive views of Siena. In need of care - peeling paint, unkempt grounds, etc. The lower part of the fort is now the Jazz association of Siena. Impressive size of the Amphitheatre. Decent walking around the top.

I have never given such a low review for a sightseeing before and I feel kind of bad doing this, but honestly I can’t believe how much it was not worth our time and the entrance fee. We planned our visit to Arezzo a few days before coming and the website of Fortezza Medici was saying it was closed. When we were in the park, we noticed many people heading towards the fortress so we followed and found out it was open. They just reopened so we were excited we could visit. The ticket was €4 per person. I guess we had higher expectations. The panoramic view everybody is talking about is on the suburban area from one side and on the huge cemetery on the other side. Despite some excavations the whole perimeter looks quite modern and the stroll doesn’t feel anything special or interesting. Honestly speaking we didn’t enjoy it and I think the place is more attractive on my photos than in real life. Makes sense to come here only for free if you are a resident .

the fort itself was for me not something very interesting or special. But the view from the tower is just amazing and worth the visit!

Arezzo Centrale was recovering from a deluge. The street sweepers were out washing down the narrow streets getting rid of the flood wrack. Empty water bottles. Visitor garbage, leaves and olive branches, broken umbrellas. The lower town had suffered its periodic washdown, all the nooks and crannies purged. Fire hoses were not friendly to adidas hiking shoes so we headed up hill to the Fortress. Located behind the church there is a treed, sheltered, and semi grassed parkland, with a gravel walk along the walls, tall walls built up to unscalable heights, looking out over the lower town and the surrounding countryside and hills.

The fortress is a five pointed star-shaped series of bastions that dominates the city and still look strong and in good repair, having been renovated quite responsibly. The highest bastion,is called “La Spina”, because it is the peak; the second “Belvedere” for its panoramic views, the third bastion “Della Chiesa” because of the previous site of San Donato’s church, the Bastion “Ponte di Soccorso” and finally the “Diacciaia”.
The upper levels of the fortress are now a well trodden and upon our visit much puddled parkland, soon to accommodate the town traders market, and a childrens playground with modern equipment. As it was sunday, the fortress below was closed to visitors, and no brochures were available.due to the weather

Advertised as a major attraction this fort was a great disappointment. Yes, the views are nice but a €5 this place has no signage and not a single information board with any information other than outside the gate. You are not given a plan or any brochure with information of the fort through the ages. This place has won numerous EU awards and one wonders how. There are lifts and devices for handicapped but none working. There is an exhibition of art but again NO information on anything....weird and disappointing.
You want people to see this then get the act together with guides and information showing the plans of the fort through the ages. Waste of money!

The Medici fortress dominates the top of the hill and is an imposing structure to visit. From the fortress and the adjacent park there are wonderful views over Arezzo. There is no charge currently to visit.

The Medici fortress, located at the highest point of the city, is a fine example of the 16th century defensive military architecture. The building is perfectly inserted in the walls and the irregular pentagonal plan, well adapted to the occupied ground, with several towers. The views are wonderful, all over the Arno valley and the Pratomagno mountain. The structure was design by Antonio de Sangallo, the Younger, and was party dismantled by French at the beginning of the 19th century.

The Fortezza, which is located next to Parco Prato and the Duomo is a must see in Arezzo. Besides being a beautiful place to walk with incredible views of the countryside around Arezzo it also currently has a very interesting sculpture exhibition by Mexican artist Gustavo Aceves. Entrance was free but now while the exhibition is on till Oct fee eur3.
