A good place to visit on a nice day
Aug 2021
I haven't walked along Whitley Bay Beach and Links for many years, but as part of a visit to St Mary's Island, had a walk along the promenade and was impressed. The Rendezvous Cafe, a local institution going back generations, has been restored, and now incorporates an art gallery. A skatepark is a popular attraction for younger people and the golf links continue to attract people wanting a game of golf. ( The links are owned by the council, so you don't need to be a member to play). Also the toilets, which when I was younger were dirty and vandalised, were immaculate and are free. For those wanting to swim or surf, there is a lifeguard in attendance and flags indicating if it is safe to take part in water sports.

For anyone older, the walk along the promenade is quite easy as it is mostly flat and access to the beach is easier than in Tynemouth. Pay and display car parking is plentiful, there is a regular bus service to Blyth and Newcastle, but people using the Metro will have a one mile walk from the town centre.

Sandy beach and green rocks with rock pools
Jun 2021 • Family
A beautiful promenade, plenty of parking and miles of Sandy beach. When the tide was low, the rocks with the green moss/algae and the myriad rock pools were fascinating.

Toilets at one end near the Spanish City and lots of takeaway options nearby.

We really had a fun half day at the beach before the tide starting coming in. The St Mary’s lighthouse at one end is very picturesque and makes for another visit.

Yes reader you need to have ‘Geordie’ blood in your system at various times of our unpredictable NE weather. This is why we are a tough population here in Whitley Bay. Lol. Born and raised here in Whitley Bay and Mum used to collect my sister and I after school and walked us down to Whitley Bay Promenade, where we used to enjoy our tea meal of sandwiches, cake and milk. Mum would treat us both to a ‘99 ice cream (Cadbury Chocolate flake) she would have had to have been served from the little window on the South side of The Roundeview cafe. There has always been an Italian family who owns the lease, over the years. Yes reader life seemed wonderful in the early 1960’s through the memories we hold in our hearts?

Mum and my Sister and I would sit over looking the Whitley Bay Promenade and we would end up on the beach. Mum would have carried down our buckets and plastic spades, so we could build sand castles. 60 years on families do the same enjoyable free entertainment. After our beach activities we would then walk the length of The Promenade, up onto Watts Slope, for a toilet break before heading home. This is why we are fit and healthy, decades on. I regularly walk the length of the coastline, now I live still in the area. When I host dogs, whilst their owners are on holiday, I regularly walk the dog along Whitley Bay Promenade, which too has had a £ million face lift. There are now colour banded walk ways and ones for push bike cyclists. Yes reader you will be very impressed with what NTC have accomplished in the last 10 years. Granted there are areas walking north from The Roundeview Cafe which are in desperate need of upgrading. Finally the 3 mile beach is the place to be on, with a dog, preferably! Do come on your next visit to our splendid bracing NE coastal attraction?👍🇬🇧🐾👍

Great, bracing, walking experience along the North Sea coast. Boardwalk, beach and links all beautiful and well maintained. Lots of dogs around who seemed to be really enjoying themselves.

I went here as a child but had not much memories. On August this year my now fiancée and I where staying in Newcastle and took a day trip up to this lovely Spanish town and walked down its stunning beach. It was a perfect warm sunny day. The promenade was smooth for my wheelchair to drive on and had lovely views of st.marys lighthouse. Café’s and buildings near by where beautiful too and the beach had a skate park for the youngsters. Absolutely stunning place. I will be back

A good clean beach and a nice place to walk.
Problem is the wind off the North sea made it very chilly out but nice to sea the sea get whipped up a bit and nothing better than crashing waves
