The area
Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

During december there is a Christmas Market at one side of the square which is also very nice, with lots of little stands selling decorations, hand-made things, snacks and Glühwein. - ShoshoDoha, Qatar45 contributionsStephanplatzOur hotel was booked at the center of the Stephanplatz where we were amazed by the grandeur of the St. Stephen Cathedral the moment we stepped out from the subway. From the airport, we took the train going to Vienna Central station (Wein HBF) then transfer to U3. It was December, so expect people will crowd the streets, nevertheless the feeling of excitement and Christmas celebration is on the air as the luminous lights shines above us as we stroll around the area during the night. The famous Wein Christmas Market is so close to the center. Above all, there are sausage stands everywhere to feed your hunger.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 March 2024
- AK8397Ontario, Canada1,052 contributionsStrolling in StephansplatzThis inner part of Vienna is a must-see for visitors. There are so many important and impressive buildings to admire (like the Opera House and St. Peter's Church), as well as shops, restaurants, cafes, monuments, etc. Much of the area is pedestrian only. But this whole area on a typical day will be very crowded and bustling, so be prepared for that. I would suggest grabbing some street food (like a sausage or soft, warm pretzel) or stopping at an outdoor cafe for a coffee and dessert. This will give you time to rest and plan your walking itinerary. There are some signs to help tourists find their way, but it still can be confusing at times to navigate some of the twisting roads. Very nice shopping area with loads of shops, both expensive and inexpensive, mainstream and more local shops.
It was also beautifully lit with Christmas decorations, and there were concerts here and there because it was New Year’s Eve.
The cathedral also had a concert which we did not go to, but that we would if we’d had some more time in Vienna.

pedestrianised streets, lots of the same shops you get in most european cities, with overpriced tourist shops selling mozart, Sisi or Mariatherese chocolates. While it was interesting to see its nothing spectacular. Hard enough to find a nice coffe shop or bar. While I suppose you have to see this section its almost has a more modern vibe with the shop facades taking over.

Vienna at Christmas is magical— dazzling lights and Christmas Markets in many neighborhoods around the city. The Stephansplatz market is great. Vaccine certificates were carefully checked. Pumpkin soup and hot mulled wine is de rigeur. Outside the markets the square is filled with history and art.

We would like to complain against the sales associate Svetlana, who works at this store, and seek explanations and apologies from the company's management. Me and my wife visited this store twice within 10 days and both times encountered rude and blatantly dismissive behavior from the sales associate Svetlana.
The first time, we came in to look at sunglasses and sandals. Svetlana offered them something to drink. I asked for a Coca-Cola, to which Svetlana rudely responded that this is not a restaurant and they only have water, champagne, or coffee. We were shocked by her tone but decided not to pursue the matter further, bought the sunglasses, and left.
Then, last Friday, my wife returned alone to the store for the sandals. Again, she dealt with Svetlana, whom she had notified in advance about her visit and set up an appointment, but this did not help. When she arrived at the store, Svetlana treated her negligently, rushing around with a pile of items for another customer, grabbing a box for her along the way, and for some reason decided to hurry her up with the payment.
My wife was not ready to pay for the sandals immediately; she wanted to try them on again. This seemed to surprise Svetlana, who made a face and left to attend to another customer. About 5 minutes after my wife tried on the sandals, Svetlana approached her again and my wife asked for something to drink. She was told that she needed to pay for the purchase first, and then she would be given water to go. My wife disagreed with these conditions and requested water right away, as well as a coffee, to which she was told to ask other staff members for coffee. Svetlana was clearly irritated and extremely unfriendly. When asked which other staff members to ask for a coffee, Svetlana did not respond and silently walked away, returning with water and coffee a moment later.
Then my wife went down to the first floor of the store to pay for the shoes. At the checkout, she asked Svetlana if they had any jackets and other non-summer clothing, to which she received the response that such clothing from the new collection were not yet available. When asked if there were any options from the old collection, Svetlana replied that there were some options, but that they would not suit her and did not even think to offer to show her anything.
In the end, she bought the sandals and even received the water and coffee she requested, but the entire experience was extremely unpleasant. The sales associate Svetlana behaves inappropriately towards the customers. It was unpleasant to interact with her, and my wife will no longer patron this Chanel store because of her. All the joy from the purchase immediately evaporated because of the attitude of the sales associate. This is not Chanel level of service.
We want Chanel to take notice of this employee and take action to remedy her behaviour, as well as apologize to us for the rude behavior of the sales associate.

Stephansplatz, right in front of St. Stephen’s church is a great place to wander and explore. And because of its central location, it’s also a great place to meet as a group should you decide to wander off on your own. There are always street performers and hawkers and of course, it’s full of tourist. Still, it’s fun to wander around and explore, do a little shopping or simply take a coffee and people watch!

As probably the focal point of the town this is a very beautiful area but also gets very busy. To that end, I would go early in the morning or later on in the evening when the daytrippers have gone.
As with many places in Vienna, the place is absolutely stunning. Many, many beautiful architectural sites and you will take lots of photographs.
It is a hive of activity and there is loads to see and do. Numerous expensive shops and some rather touristy looking restaurants.
A must do but probably just the one visit. There is just so many things to do in Vienna!

Located in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral, this is the busiest place in Vienna. It's the belly button of Vienna. Even though it's a place like that, the smell of horses is in the air, and it exudes the feeling of Vienna, a historic city. I went to many places during my stay, but somehow I passed by this square every day. The surrounding area is lively, and it's good to see St. Stephen's Cathedral. It's a place you'll never get bored of.
