- Gino079Chelmsford, United Kingdom57 contributionsGreat free place to wanderFree visit to Citadel, museums are pay on entry. A really good wander. We did Mdina on ferry trip and hop on hop off bus. Only had time for 3 stops but all worked as we hoped. Spoke to another couple who did coach tour in the same time and they described it as a hurded tourVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 October 2023
- MarpleTravellerMarple, United Kingdom1,481 contributionsGreat Visitor ExperienceThe Citadel in Victoria is a must visit if on the island of Gozo. There are several museums and interesting features within the Citadel as well as the Cathedral in St John Paul II square. All are worth visiting but if you do intend to fully explore the Citadel it can take a good 3hrs. It is possible to explore the walls and the ditch surrounding the Citadel. There is an interpretation centre which is run by Heritage Malta and a multi site ticket within the Citadel is available. This does not include the Cathedral or the Cathedral Museum, which are extra. Definitely worth a visit, I’ve been man6 times and always see / learn something new.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023
- Travelingtheworld🌍9 contributionsBeautiful at nightWe came up here late evening for a wander. It is free to walk around and was lovely lit up. Felt a bit surreal it was so quiet. Plenty of signs around with information on them for you to appreciate the heritage and history of the site. Recommend for a lovely evening walk from your hotel.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 January 2024
- soinic2,752 contributionsOutstanding UNESCO World Heritage Must Visit 🌞The citadel, ex fortification is beautifully restored and offers a unique back in time travel. Visiting the cittadella is for free, but buying a cheap ticket in order to visit the interesting museums intra muros is recommended! (Old Prison, museum of Archeology, museum of Natural History, Gran Castello Historic house etc). Great history, great views, great for picture taking .... Check opening times, especially during "winter season"! In February 2024, we had a superb visit, perfect weather and not overcrowded 🌞Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 February 2024
- Nez DHuntington, New York858 contributionsGreat panoramic views of GozoRevised review: During our tour, we only had 30 minutes to fully explore this expansive location, but I could easily envision spending half a day here. Positioned at a high vantage point, the views of the island are spectacular, offering glimpses of various villages identifiable by their churches. While admission is free, additional fees apply for access to the jails, which we would have gladly paid had we more time available.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2024
- OreganoParsleyBasilEngland, United Kingdom193 contributionsWell presented and quaintArrived about 11am but was already very busy, could be because of cruise ship excursions. A few hours later we found it much quieter and was able to appreciate this beautiful area more peacefully. Well preserved and clean. Found the bus from the ferry terminal crowded so we used Bolt, quick and simple.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2024
- Cathy NCraigavon, United Kingdom437 contributionsBreathtaking viewsIt is quite a steep climb up but it is so worth it. The views are fabulous. You can see for miles, pretty much the whole of Gozo is laid out for you. The history is fascinating as well. There is a museum though we had our own tour guide. Well worth a walk round.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2024
- Aidan R32 contributionsThe Citadel in Malta is a must-see!The stunning panoramic views, rich history, and beautifully preserved architecture make it a highlight of any visit. Wandering through its ancient streets feels like stepping back in time. An unforgettable experience!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 August 2024
- AndythebaggieBirmingham, United Kingdom3,224 contributionsGreat views & historyWe enjoyed a short stop here on our tour. There’s a lift now which negates a lot of the steep climb to gain entry. There is a small but interesting museum and the cafe on the battlements is a great place to enjoy the spectacular views of Gozo with a glass of local wine. The Citadel is a fine place to wander around and enjoy the architecture.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 September 2024

My partner and I were astounded at only having to pay €5 for entry into the Cittadella - as tourist attractions go, the offering here is value for money in the truest sense of the word. Worth noting that entry cannot be paid by cash here.
We loved the modern and interactive exhibits in the visitor centre, the 9 min movie (which is screened on all 4 walls in the room) was excellent and we particularly loved learning about prison life, in the old jail.
We spent time just wandering around the winding paths and staircases and loved the views from the highest points.
I would highly recommend a trip to the Citadella to anyone that wants to get a real flavour of Gozo's history and immerse themselves in lovely surroundings.

The citadel is very easy to reach and for free, you can spend quite a while strolling through the streets and exploring the citadelle. Afterwards, we went around the whole island with a taxi for a very good price, Maria Lourdes Formosa brought us everywhere safely and told us interesting things about the location and local customs. Very recommendable! (You can reach her on +356 9942 9274).

There is no charge to wander through the Citadella. However, for €5 you can buy a multi-ticket for the four (not that good) museums inside. We also splashed out an extra €2 for the car park located just beyond the main entrance. The views from the ramparts are impressive.

what a lovely place to spend 1-2 hours. the citadel is free to enter. you only need to pay 5e if you wish to visit selected museums
since it is located high up, it is also a good vantage point for surrounding neighborhoods and farmlands.

Definitely worth the climb. The views of the rest of the island & Malta are outstanding.
The building is amazing.
Make sure that you take a walk around the outside of the whole building.
Obtaining entrance to the building needs to be improved - you currently have to walk down a path way with a signing stating that the Citadel is closed for the day (ignore this) - you will find a small door way with a sign stating tickets available, make sure you go in - don't miss this place.

Great to wander round, lots of little museums and shops, photo opportunities, great views, and plenty of shady spots to cool down in. It's worth going into the visitor centre for the interactive displays and to pick up a museums entrance ticket for €5. Not too busy when we went in early July. I'd suggest avoiding the open air cafe (drinks are extremely expensive) and going to one of the many other cafes in Victoria.

Great place with no required entrance fee (!) If you are driving I highly recommend the parking lot at the last hairpin in the entrance road (gps may show as private for the church, seems to be this is only restricted if there is a church function otherwise anyone can use) - 2euro fee iirc.
Wonderful step back in time (or step up lol - use the lifts from the visitor center if walking up from town). Stroll through the narrow lanes, enjoy the incredible views, and poke into stores and museums and the church - also cafes. Lifts are free, the visitor center is part of a group of facilities for 5eruo pp including a historic home in the Citadel and a few other museums in the Citadel. Visitor center is small but well done.

We visited Gozo from Valletta on the Gozo/Valletta fast ferry (45 mins each way).
It casts €30 for four of us and on the return we paid €38 for the VIP seats (well worth the small extra). On arrival in Gozo we got the local bus to Victoria, the capital. The highlight of Victoria is the magnificent fortified Citadel. There is so much to experience and see in the Citadel and Victoria. We spent 3.5 hours there and congratulated ourselves in not using the hop on hop off bus as we would have not had long in Victoria. Nice cafés in Victoria often in beautiful squares.

This huge citadel is overlooking Rabat and surroundings. It's an enormous structure - do not miss it when visiting Gozo. The walls are thick, the views are very good on a clear day. Behind the walls you will find a small city with its own streets, church, old prison, museum and so on. The whole citadel complex dates back to early 17th century - a lot of information can be obtained at the visitor centre, but if you don't have much time, just wander around and enjoy.

I visited the Citadel very early morning. One office in the Citadel had the door open, and there were two men chatting inside. I politely knocked, said hello, and asked if I could have some tap water, as stores in town were still closed.
One of the men (see attached photo) jumped from his desk, rapidly approached me threateningly, and angrily shouting "Get out, get out!". A surprising, scary, and outrageous reaction from Catholic staff, that left me with bitter memories of the Citadel. A shame!

Hi,
Can you walk around the citadel at anytime? I know the visitor centre closes at 5pm does that mean you cannot get in just walk around after that time?
Thanks
Written 14 September 2018
Yes, you can walk around the citadel at night, in fact it is a lovely time to see it, as there are no tourists around. The lights of various towns can be seen on Gozo which is also great to see. We wandered up there after dinner and saw three people, one was the security guard. Obviously things will not be open.

Si può partire da Malta, utilizzando mezzi pubblici e recarsi a La Cittadella? Intendo autonomamente senza tour guidati
Written 27 August 2018
Certo che si...autobus+traghetto+autobus e viceversa al ritorno
Written 27 August 2018
Where is the nearest parking area and how far is it to walk from there?
Written 6 August 2017
You drive up the hill, just past the Citadel and there is a dirt lot at the top of the street. Park and a short walk down the hill to the visitors center or just walk up the ramp into the Citadel.

I have booked the tour for 4 adults. Is the booking reference all I need or do I have to print a voucher?
Written 24 May 2017
Reference should be ok but check with the agent. He should have given you a phone number. Or ask your hotel to check.

The Mgarr marina website says that things are closed on Sunday but tourist malta site said museums are open Monday-Sunday. I know the Citadel is open to wander around, but does anyone know about the old prison and the folklore museum?
Written 23 March 2017
I am sorry. I was there on a week day.
You can walk around all days but I don´t knwo about the museum.
Written 30 March 2017
Yes I'm sure that is no problem...just make sure you clean up after it

Hi
Hoping to go and have a wander about the citadel when it's slightly cooler
Does anyone know whether there are opening hours? Or is it accessible 24/7?
Many thanks!
Written 2 August 2016
Access to the Cittadella is 24/7, there is no time when the entrance is closed, what is closed at night are the Cathedral, the shops and museums.
Unusually for many places the Cittadella remains lit all night until sunrise, it is a great place to visit in the small hours of the morning when everyone else is fast asleep
