Solheimajokull Glacier
Solheimajokull Glacier

About
Lying just off the Ring Road, Solheimajokull is one of Iceland’s most accessible glaciers. It's just a short five-minute walk from the carpark to the glacier lagoon, and another 10 minutes to reach the glacier wall itself. Admire the otherworldly glaciers, but note that you shouldn't venture onto the glacier without the proper equipment and a guide. The best way to explore the glacier is on a guided hike or even on an ice-climbing tour. Solheimajokull can be seen and hiked all year round; visit from November to March when you'll be able to venture into an ice cave. – Tripadvisor

- Michael KLondon, United Kingdom551 contributionsGreat but retreating phenomenon of natureThis is a tongue of the large Myrdalsjökull Glacier, stretching out towards the sea, but in overall retreat since the 1930s. As you drive towards it you at first are at the side of a river that flows from its melt water, then the deeply scarred valley where it once sat, till eventually you reach its tongue. It is retreating a little each year. You can get fairly close to it on a platform; only organised groups with a trained leader can go right up to it or on it. It is striated with black from the debris is has picked up over the years. It is an impressive yet also challenging sight, as it so eloquently highlights the consequences of global warming. Very moving to stand before this great and ancient phenomenon of nature. NB; you have to pay to use the toilets here.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- Bandit-OneLucerne, Switzerland10,512 contributionsBigger and better than expectedThis glacier here was a great attraction and a lot bigger and better than we assumed. We visited it on our own without a tour, since we didn't plan to walk on it, only enjoy the area, the views and a short walk to see the glacier up close. There's a huge parking lot. Costs a small fee. There's also a visitors center with infos, tours and public toilets. From here a trail leads to the viewing platform. From there you still can continue until you reach the glacier tongue. You can so close until you really can touch it. All without a guide or tour. You can take a few steps on it right at the tongue. But after a few meters you shouldn't go further on your own. A tour or guide and the right gear will be needed from there. But for us that was enough to really enjoy and appreciate this glacier. It's massive, on the pics it looked a lot smaller. It's just a beautiful sight with the mountains in the back and the glacier with its lake. Some ice is drifting in the lake, a very pretty sight. Together with the black sand it makes a unique and amazing sight. After the visit we didn't follow the path back but walked along the lake and then the river to get back to the visitors center. Not many folks around. Very nice.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 November 2023

We were in Iceland for our wedding and honeymoon and this was the best day trip we took in the 10 days we were in Iceland. The weather could have been better but that's nothing to complain about, haha. It's Iceland!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 December 2023

We visited the place by ourselves and walked to the glacier. A guide of a tour of 15 people who were paying like 250 euro each for this, was kind of angry with us and said that we should have an axe and a strap around the waist in order to go up. He said that because he wanted to find an excuse to the 15 paying customers who were feeling uncomfortable seeing us doing the tour free of charge.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2023
- MarinerpeepsColorado Springs, Colorado13 contributionsA good hike rewarded with amazing views.Took this hike as part of a 3 day tour from Reykjavik. Exceptional experience from the safety briefings all the way thru the moderately strenuous hike up and back. We had Michele leading our group, and her passion and energy kept even the slowest members (basically me) of our group forging onward, only to be rewarded with amazing views and amazing memories. An experience well worth the efforts.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 January 2024

About a 10 minute drive off the ring road. Large car park with pay toilets. Parka App parking payment (phone reception weak we had to drive to a far corner of the car park to be able to pay via the app). Great 10 minute walk to glacier viewing area with amazing views, glad we made the detour.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 March 2024
- CINDYROSE720Denver, Colorado1,476 contributionsWorth the hike!2024-March. We visited this glacier through a tour company. We went on a Tuesday. It was very windy and cold when we went. But we were determined to do the hike. We parked and hiked closest to the glacier where we wore the crampons our guide gave us. He also gave us an ice pick and safety instructions. He was nice and very patient. The hike was hard. Just reminded me how out of shape I was 🤣. After we reached the top, it was BREATHTAKING! Although all you see are ice and lava sand-covered ice... it was still a great experience. There were people there who didn't have a guide but they knew what they were doing. It was hard going back to our tour vehicle because the wind started blowing hard. There are no restrooms or souvenir shops here or in the parking area. Please 'like" if this review helped you in any way. Have a safe hike 😊Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 March 2024
- AustintoBostonBoston, Massachusetts409 contributionsEasy Glacier VisitIt was steadily raining in the early evening when we stopped here, so the site was all but empty. It could be my own ignorance, but I expected the glacier to appear more blue than it was. Instead, it was covered in brown/black sediment and not at all like the photos I had seen. Great way to see a glacier if you are not able to make the long drive down to Jokulsarlon. Right off the ring road and plenty of parking. On the way in we passed a group who had just done a glacier walk, and that looked kind of cool if we had more time on our hands.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 August 2024
- Richard WPenn Valley, California878 contributionsA close up view of a receding glacier..Glaciers are disappearing from our planet so take every chance to see one up close. This glacier is actively receding as is evidenced by the mini ice bergs floating in the lake formed in front of the glacier face. There are good trail, but access to getting on the glacier is controlled. Being near a glacier gives one the perspective on size now, how big and deep it used to be and the path of glacial movement. It is worth the drive to see this piece of history. Our grandchildren may not have this opportunity. It is worth the drive to see and is included in many tours options from Reykjavik.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 August 2024
- William SKobe, Japan1,527 contributionsOnly Glacier I’ve Every Seen!If you’ve not seen a glacier it is worth a visit here. The glacier is retreating -despite what climate-change deniers would admit - and this is a good example of this dynamic. You’ll walk about 15 minutes to see the glacier and some remnants of where it was earlier. It was a bit “dirty” as it hasn’t yet snowed this year. The guide said it needs 16 ft/ year of snow in order to not lose mass. There’s a small food shop and toilets here. Great photo opportunities. Those who want to kayak or climb on the ice can organize tours. In other words, there’s more available than just looking at it.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2024

I’m glad I went on the glacier, but you really need to be prepared. Nr 1: do not believe what the sites & travel agencies say, this is NOT for all ages. You really need to be reasonably fit to do this activity. Nr 2: this is no walk on a glacier, it’s very physical. You will have to wear crampons on your shoes, go up & down parts of ice around the glacier before actually reaching it. Nr3: it’s important to have the right equipment, do not buy things from decathlon, buy all water proof equipment in Iceland (pants, jacket, ski gloves, backpack) if windy you may even want to wear ski glasses. Nr 4: bring extra warm clothes & leave them in the car/bus.
The information on the various travel agencies website is misleading. 9 times out of 10 it will be raining on the glacier with strong winds therefore waterproof clothes is very important. I would recommend this activity if you are fit & have the right equipment. A few in our group had to wait in the bus because it was clear they could never climb up. Those that did go were completely wet, I mean all the clothes, items in their bags, wet & frozen. I would not recommend this for children below 15 or adults over 60 unless you’re really fit.

Another impressive sight on the South Coast, Sólheimajökull is one of the many outlet glaciers of the mighty icecap of Mýrdalsjökull. Sólheimajökull is easily accessible; you get off the Ring Road and drive for about 4 km to the parking lot. You can hike right up to the glacier; it takes about 15 minutes depending on your pace. Simply spectacular and awe inspiring! One of my most favorite stops on the South Coast.
Don't miss it!

We saw time lapse of this glacier receding in the 'Chasing Ice' documentary but nothing prepared us for the vast space which the glacier had dominated until recently. The glacier itself was amazing and our guide (Maria from Glacier Guides) was the best guide ever! She made sure we knew how to stay safe on the glacier and gave us plenty of history while showing a lot of respect and love for the glacier. Highly recommend this glacier and this tour or one of the longer ones!

It was a lifetime experience! Honestly, the weather didn't accommodate well. It was raining so heavy and most people in the group were soaking wet after the three hours glacier hiking. That's why you should equip with waterproof clothing. But our guide Wei was saving this trip by his knowledge about the glacier and his helpfulness to every team member. Highly recommend! Be fully prepared and you will never be disappointed with the view up there!

We wanted to thank Vderan for the wonderful experience we had on our hike with him. He made the experience extremely memorable from beginning to end. My husband Sal is diabetic, and he talked to him before the hike to go over the specific demands of the tour. His concern and expertise in reviewing all the safety issues before we started hiking demonstrated his highly qualified experience in this type of activity. He was extremely informative as he explained all the history and current events happening with the glaciers in Iceland, which helped all of us to understand the intensity of the trip. His very casual and delightful personality made every minute fun and exciting. You are lucky to have such a highly qualified employee with your company, who will surely make future visitors happy to schedule tours with you. We will certainly recommend your company to our friends and family due to the amazing trip with had with Vderan.

Traveling along the SS1, turn onto the 221 and follow it for 5 km until you reach the car park (for a fee). From here in 10 minutes on an almost flat dirt path you will arrive along the river full of icebergs at the offshoot of the glacier. If you are adventurous and if you have time available, book one of the crampon excursions that will take you to the frozen ridges of Solheimajokull or into the caves formed by the meltwater and which flow into the lake.

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap which lies atop the Katla caldera. It sits near the town of Vík í Mýrdal, a popular tourist location . The glacier is melting rapidly owing to warmer annual temperatures due to climate change. The glacier is about 15 km long.
I visited this on 20th Mar'23 as part of our Southern Iclsnds Tour from Reykjavik. Fir tourists, this is the only option, since Iceland is notoriously for its almost absent public transport system. It was very windy and cold day. With temperatures at -2° and wind speed of 50 to 60 km per hour, it was quite a challenge. The view is absolutely stunning. In winter month , you can't walk on glacier or climb up the highlands on the side , since icy steps are dangerous and you need special shoes and gears for handling this. At the end of the 15mibutes walk we reached the glacier mouth. There is a viewing deck there, where you get a complete view of the glacier and the stream that is created at its mouth.

My husband and I visited Sólheimajökull Glacier while exploring Iceland's South Coast. This glacier has an easy path alongside the lagoon in front of it. The glacier is absolutely beautiful and it was interesting to see a few pieces of ice floating in the lagoon in front of it. There were also plenty of waterfalls around, including one that is visible above/behind the glacier.

We did the Glacier Walk with Icelandic Mountain Guides and this was our favorite activity in Iceland. Sign-in and equipment distribution take place in a warm building. Guides were patient and helpful with suiting up. They were very informative and helpful. (Note that you are not supposed to walk on the glacier without crampons and other equipment, so I would not attempt it without guides). They took photos for groups several times throughout the experience. The glacier is BEAUTIFUL. The information shared by the guides about its movement and changes throughout the year and over time was interesting (and alarming). A winter visit was spectacular!

Can you hike on the glacier without being on a tour? If you do want a tour guide, can you get one once you arrive at the glacier or do reservations need to be made with an offsite tour operator?
Written 1 February 2020
There is no law per section to forbid you from trekking up on the glacier by yourself. HOWEVER much local knowledge and common sense suggests this is not a good idea. PLUS SIDE, DOING IT YOURSELF...anyone can hike safely from parking lot to great views, gdecent conditions. You may find yourself content with this. If you want on glacier experience, there are guiding services at parking lot...or you can pre book. The point is, please dont attempt on your own. Here are my pictures, no guides needed, from trail to view glacier

Best camping option by glacier
Written 1 June 2019
The best camping would depend on the time of year and the amount of daylight available. I would go with a professional guide. Quicksand is common near the glacier and at times there are falling stones.

Hi - you said it was just off the ring road. Can you access if you do not have 4wd?

Yes, you can definitely access it even if you don't have a 4wd. It is super easy. You park by a small building/barrack and walk as far as the trail allows you. You need to stop at the point which informs you it is no longer safe to walk (unless you are with someone qualified or a tour).

Definitely well worth the stop. Allow yourself at least 45 min. - 1 hr. for the walk up to the foot of the glacier as the walk is nice. You don't need a guide for that portion.
