Holavallagardur, called sometimes also the Old Churchyard was opened in 1838 . It is an amazingly atmospheric graveyard. Holavallagardur is one of the most magical places in Reykjavik. Mossy, narrow paths , the forest-like nature of paths and stone makes it seemed to be a Secret Garden. This is a beautiful resting place. This place is so quiet and lovely and allows for much meditation. If you nearby Tjornin Lake then pay a visit in this beautiful place.

I feel so lucky that I stumbled upon this cemetery by chance, and right as the sun was setting. Amazing spooky but also peaceful vibes. There are some signs and information in the center of the cemetery that I found really interesting. A great place to wander!

If you like old cemeteries, you'll like this one. It offers a very moody, atmospheric experience. Also unusual (for Reykjavik) is the dense overgrowth of trees (some of which are quite old). And I found it thrilling to stand in front of the gravestone for Jón Sigurðsson, the father of Icelandic independence.

If you like cemeteries, this one does have a charming character and is the last resting place of some noteworthy Icelanders.
A bonus is that it is free to enter, providing your still alive.

I loved taking a walk here with my dog. No tourist or tourist buses taking up the whole parking lot and park.

We walked by here on the way to the history museum. It was really interesting to see how long people lived here in a time where people, generally, didn't live terribly long. Icelanders.... tough folks

It’s beautiful during the day but at night this place becomes the gateway to hell. Chased out by a floating torso of a man with a beard.

The location of this cemetery is accessible from the city bus route. It is peaceful and has some history to read about on the signs. The paths are nice and well kept.
According to a sign in the yard,it is believed that the person who is first buried in a cemetery becomes the guardian and therefore does not rest peacefully, but watches over the cemetery and its occupants.

Iceland's oldest cemetery (i think) is a very short walk from the town centre and totally worth it. Its a peaceful place with very old (by Icelandic standards) graves going back to the mid 19th century.
In the morning, the sun comes through the trees nice and lows and it makes for some nice misty photos. I bring people here to photograph to try the different angles.
Many of the graves have trees coming out of them, one can imagine that the deceased have returned to the earth from whence they came.
highly recommended, and free

Hi,
Is there a Sexton there who could help us find ancestor's graves? Thank you, Sharon Rogers

I'm not allowed to post web links. But search Hólavallagarður Cemetery graves. Two sites will pop up: Find a Grave H.C. and Gardur site (Icelandic). Both have names search boxes. Google will translate the gardur site. Good luck
