I stumbled across this quote accidentally on my mooch around to see one of the universities buildings. There is a small fee to use the changing rooms, but they have baskets for you to keep your belongings in and nice warm showers. There is a steam room which you can go in which is all the way on the left hand side of the pool. This is absolutely gorgeous and definitely relaxes either before or after you enter the pool.
Because of the sulphur content of the water, it is a bit smelly upon your arrival. However with a bit of time, this does get better! The water also feels a bit oily but so amazingly warm. You can also choose to go for a dip in the sea, which a lot of the locals do, or when the tide comes in, the little lagoon which is geothermal heated.
Honestly, I would recommend anyone go here; a definite gem hidden out the back of the city!

Such an amazing experience. There is a hot bath located just in the edge of the beach, a steam room, a warmer area of the sea to swim or the freezing cold sea. There are changing rooms, lockers (need to bring your own padlock), showers, toilets & hot drinks + snacks. If you don’t need to use a locker you can store your things in crate baskets which are provided. There is a small fee to use the changing facilities. It is so so beautiful here!!

Without a doubt the most exciting trip I have ever done. Glaciers, geysers, black sand beaches and wonderful, friendly people. However, for me, the Northern Lights were very disappointing. Not visible with the naked eye and only if you have a telescope or great camera, can you see anything at all. Will have to try another time!

We went to explore this place in the evening. Very yellow sand, cigarette buds in it. The so called hot spa was empty, not sure if this was for cleaning or for good. It is a concrete pool, you could see some green algae and a lot of sand in it. It might be end of the season. The other flat pool that can be seen on many pictures may have a temperature of 35 degrees. Can't comment on change facilities but place didn't look very inviting.

Was very disappointed to see that March 20th, 2014 the site is under maintenance. There is no water in any of the hot tubs or the geothermal portion either. Too bad! Just wanted to let others know so that you don't waste time coming to find a closed beach! :(

Iceland can be expensive so finding fun free adventures are a double score! It's a 20 minute walk out of town...don't freak out..the walk will go fast, it's worth it, it's a good way to burn off the at chocolate dipped ice cream you had and it's really not that far to walk. Anyway, they have changing rooms (bring a lock if you are worried--but no one else does). This site also has FREE available grills so bring some bread and cheese for some grilled sandwiches--mmm! The heated pools is just for sitting in but it's so cozy and rewarding (and free--I like free!). For the brave, you can make a mad dash to the heated (more like warmed) beach water or be insane and go in to the fridge ocean water. People like doing this. But, for me the heated hot tub felt so good that leaving for anything but another hot top seemed pointless. But, people do like to alternate among the hot tub and the warmed beach and the ocean water. Either way, bring a towel, friends, camera, ball, and/or a book. Check the hours as the hours change depending on the season. But yes, I would recommend! If you can't afford the money or the time to go to the blue lagoon (shame!!!), then this is a good substitute. If you have been on tours all day and want to relax with some locals...this is also a good idea. Highly recommended. Simple, clean, safe, free with hot relaxing water. Yep!

Having visited this Geothermal Beach three times now, I can say in confidence that this is one of my favourite places to go whilst holidaying in Iceland. The place is very simple; just a long hot tub looking out to the ocean, basic changing rooms and a steam room with shower, but it's such a peaceful and relaxing place, and so close to the city centre.
I spend over an hour here each time I go - soaking in the hot tub and then running down to the ocean to cool off every quarter of an hour or so. It feels completely bizarre to be in your bikini whilst on a snow covered beach but the whole experience is absolutely heavenly and your body and skin will love you for it!
I've only ever been in February (twice this year and once last year). I prefer going on the evening sessions so you can be there in the hot tub whilst the sun goes down. Lovely!
It only costs around £2.50 for one person to go, so it's far far more affordable than the Blue Lagoon or the Laugavatn Fontana, for example. I love this place and will return when I visit Reykjavik again!
The place is easy to find by car, and there is a free car park nearby. The changing rooms don't have lockers (just baskets on shelves) but if you have any valuables you just need to ask the friendly people at the entrance to look after it for you. They took care of my DSLR when I didn't want to leave it in the changing rooms.

This beach is about a 25 minute walk from the Hotel Fron. We travelled to Iceland in October and decided to see if we could find a beach, which we did. When we arrived we found the staff very friendly and helpful, apparently in the summer it is free to use but in the late autumn/winter there is a small charge of around 400 i.krona each, cheap really. It was a little surreal walking down the beach in a costume, heading towards the Atlantic Ocean, with some frost on the sand but all the Icelanders were doing it so we thought lets join them.Obviously they are quite use to it but boy did we get a shock when we stepped in to that water, I know people say the Atlantic is cold but it was freezing. It was very nice and welcoming to go and warm up in the geothermal hot tubs afterwards.
A lovely way to unwind and no rush what so ever.
During the late autumn/ winter the facilities do close at 1pm.

An amazing experience - come early if you want to avoid the crowds. When we left at 12:30pm, the hot tub was already getting pretty near full. Bring your own towel, and be aware that there are no lockers. You can opt to put your valuables into a little basket that is stored at the front desk. Definitely worth a stop - enjoy hopping in and out of the steam room, ocean, and hot tub while soaking in a pretty awesome view to boot! 600 ISK.

I can't believe no one has written a review on this attraction yet. It was one of our highlights in Reykjavik. As I recall it was free (perhaps because it was off-season), but I don't know if that is still the case today. My Brother and I went there the weekend it opened for the season in May 2008. We enjoyed it enough to stay for at least a couple of hours. For most of that time we were the only ones there (it was cold, overcast, and sometimes drizzling), aside from the lifeguards - and they were wearing parkas/winter jackets! You can go into one of the hotpots, and you can go into the sheltered area of the ocean. The heated hotpot waters flow into the cold ocean, making it bearable. The thrill is feeling conflicting cold and warm currents as you're swimming in the sheltered ocean area. It is also a thrill (and a chill) walking wet in the cold upon exiting the hotpots or ocean. Crazy Canucks!

How big is the heated area? Is the water there comfortable in June?

Is the Bay Area warmer at high tide or low tide? If the tide is low, is it below the ring of geothermal water and doesn’t get heated?

Which bus did you have to take? Is it far from the bus stop?
Also, were there changing areas?
Written 2 August 2018
I was hiking in search for birds in the area so I did not take any transport at all. Please check on Reykjavik websites and I am sure you will come up with something. Have a nice trip!

I passed by the place on a random walk and I have no idea about their opening time. When I was there, I did not see any people though. Sorry I cannot be of much help. May be you can try to search on google. Have a great time when you visit.

I don't think so/ I think you pack your own... and folks had back packs- and they had swim suits on, and they ran into the colder water from the thermal too!! Yikes - it looked like you were on your own basically, not structured like the Blue Lagoon.

Hello! How do you get to that place? By bus? How far is it from the city?

We had a rental car, a map- and just explored- it was closer to the city then we thought ....

My husband and I have a long layover in Reykjavik and are very excited to explore what we can in Iceland. We will be renting a car and are hoping to check out Nauthólsvík Beach, can anyone tell me if there is parking at the beach?
Written 22 March 2018
Yes, plenty, there's parking at the marina and even if that was full, there's parking at the university a 5 mins walk away.

Does anyone know if items as big as luggage can be left behind the counter for a fee? Looking for a good stop while waiting to check in and will have bags. Thanks!
