The art exhibits are not family friendly! There should be a warning on your way in about nudity, bestiality etc. The history exhibit was really nice but you have to walk thru two buildings full of sketchy art to get there.

This is one of those memory makers that are part of every great vacation. We had some extra time before heading to the Blue Lagoon so we spent a couple of hours exploring this gem with great contemporary art and cultural displays. However the crème de la crème was the huge exhibit of model fishing and other boats all built by a seaman during the 30 years of his retirement. At least 200 of his 500 magnificent custom constructed models were on display. My wife and I have no particular connection to sea life or fishing but were just amazed by the magnitude of the collection. While there we learned that this genius craftsman died only three weeks prior to our visit.

Keflavik is probably less visited because of bigger hitters elsewhere on the island.
Great views from the coastal walk. Not far from the international airport.
The museum here is small but very well done and informative. Part museum and part art gallery. So much information about the country and the local way of life. There is an entrance fee,I can't remember exactly how much.
Leave the room full of colourful model boats until the end. Jaw dropping and worth a visit on its own.
Attached café/restaurant good for coffee, snacks or something more substantial. Well worth a visit.

I finished lunch early, but I wish I finished it even earlier so I could have more time to peruse this museum before heading back on my flight. I paid about $12 to get in, but their 6 exhibits were definitely worth it. Whether you are a contemporary art fan, or a boat enthusiast, or an ornithologist (bird enthusiast), geology or earth aficionado, interested in Icelandic history, this place has got them all covered. This museum doesn't seem like much from the outside, but I assure you, it is very well curated and maintained.

Impressive collection of handmade wooden model ships - at least 200 - crafted by an earnest hobbyist, is impressive, though the signage is Icelandic, so the descriptions were unrecognizable. Directions to the museum are not clearly marked like the Viking museum, so find it on the west side of the harbor road. Afterwards, it's a quick 5 minute drive to airport. It is a beautiful building, and found myself admiring the beams and rafters secured with wooden pegs - great craftsmanship.

We stayed at the Berg, ate at the Duus, and killed time on a cliff walk and a walk through this museum. It is really cool. it's one of the best up close views of the history of icelandic life from back in the day. the two upstairs floors are great - lots of little bits and pieces of things but good descriptions of things in english. main floor has good write ups on the geology/water topography of the area.
really highly recommended

We stopped in Keflavic on a rainy afternoon and decided to visit the Duus museum, if you are ever near take time to visit.
There are 6 different exhibition rooms including an art hall which will have different artists throughout the year, and a boat hall containing over 100 hand made models and a pictorial history of fishing in Iceland.
Go you will not be disappointed.

We loved all the model boats and the stories along the wall. We were so lucky that a local artist from this town was just opening her exhibit. Clay sculptures with a flare for the eccentric. Loved the video of her making her artwork. We also enjoyed a
free day.

If you're doing a stopover and staying in the town of Keflavik, this is a nice walk from the town core with beautiful scenery. Unlike everything in Iceland (including $5 for a small bottle of Fanta), the admission price wasn't too expensive. Interesting enough exhibits - but what really grabbed me was the artwork done by the kids. They have an outstanding kids program that made the visit worth it. Stairs to the second floor are steep. With my dodgy knee I was afraid I wouldn't make it back down. No elevator. Friendly staff. Wouldn't take more than an hour to get through unless you're into model ships. Huge exhibit would appeal to that kind of hobbiest. "Giantess" attraction is nearby.
