I visited the monastery with my boyfriend and we both lit candles for some of our loved ones who are going through particularly difficult times. The church itself is small, but the environment as a whole is serene and peaceful, especially with the mountains and the view of Halki you get when you look onto the horizon. A family member of mine recommended we visit the monastery because this Saint had helped him with a struggle in his life, so we felt the need to go and venerate.

The small but religious significant Monastery of Agios Ioannis (Saint John) Alarga is situated on a high plateau and lies at the west end of Halki. There is a nice peaceful courtyard in the monastery with a large cypress tree. Visitors can spend the night there in rooms/cells The monastery is located 8 kilometres  (5 miles) west of Emporio, it is a good 2 hours plus walk. The Monastery is of great religious significance to the Islanders and at the end of August 28/9th there is a huge festival and people come from all over and stay. There is a local bus which goes to the Monastery on Friday evenings, some people choose to walk there, we were very fortunate to be given a lift, this was Monday evening 13th June about 5.30. It really did give us the opportunity to see another aspect of life past and present on the Island and the spectacular views. On route to the Monastery we passed the virtually deserted village of Chorio, the old village, where the church of Panagia dedicated to the Virgin Mary, proudly stands. On the feast of the Virgin Mary (15th of August), there is a celebration on the night of the 14th with traditional Greek music.  Right above the church, there is the is the breathraking UNESCO protected 14th century castle/fortress built for the protection from the pirates. It is a steep climb, but worth it - recommend wearing sturdy shoes, not flip flop territory. The journey to the Monastery was so worth it, it was a real privilege to been taken there and shown the sights en route.
