The nightly 8.00pm service is a must & we did consecutive nights of the memorial bugle call commemorating the end of WW1 Try and get there at least 30 min earlier for a good viewing as it could get quite full

What else can you say it is so moving being at Menin Gate at 8...but otherwise... well it is a place of sadness and reflection. A must visit.

The original lions are back in Australia, but replicas have been commissioned and sit proudly on the plinths. The memorial was awash with poppies, with it being the weekend after the 100th anniversary.

The names on the Menin gate make such pointless loss so real. It is worth walking behind into the galleries and up onto the ramparts

An amazing memorial to the thousands of brave men who died fighting for our freedoms. When you view all the names it brings into focus the sacrifices these men made for our freedoms.

A sobering visit to an immense monument. Our time of visit did clash with a number of school trips, so was not particularly quiet.

If you know the name and regiment it could still take a while but all the Australian battalions are together so that might be easier. There is a shelf below the column where his name is so you can leave a poppy there.
