About
The Markthal (English: Market Hall) is a residential and office building with a market hall, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014, by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars. The Markthal was designed by architectural firm MVRDV. The grey nature stone building has an archwise structure like a horseshoe. The building has a glass facade on both sides, these are made up of smaller glass windows. The smaller windows are mostly squared and around 1485 millimeters wide. All of these are hung around a structure of steel cables, 34 metres high and 42 metres wide, which makes it the largest glass-window cable structure in Europe. Each facade has 26 vertical and 22 horizontal cables. The inside of the building is an 11.000 m2 artwork by Arno & Iris Coenen, named Hoorn des Overvloeds (Horn of Plenty).

The market hall provides so many options for snacks, drinks, lunches & early dinner. Asian, Mediterranean & European styles available. Some of the food stands have terraces on upper level which is nice to relax & see the ceiling art in an even better way.

Very commercial and a bit soulless. Impressive building, but the food stalls had nothing on the likes of Barcelona or London food markets. Bit disappointed to see a TGI Fridays. Hey, maybe I’m just being a snob.

I loved the fries with spicy mustard.
The only set back was that you had to pay 1 euro use the restroom but I guess that is the norm here.

An incredible building - just look up the ceiling is WOW!
All the food you could ever fancy eating from all around the world or just a feast for the eyes as you wander around and look at all the stalls have to offer.
Busy and buzzy feel to the place but not frenetic or overwhelmiong.
Didn't feel like it was a tourist rip off place either as some big city food markets can be (I see you Barcelona!) but somewhere that locals went to eat out too.

Stunning building! Lots of shops, food, liquor store, grocery store; I highly recommend TGI Friday - the spare ribs are great!

We stayed opposite the Market and strolled over no anticipating much but on entry the food smell sent out taste buds into overdrive, trying not to eat everything at the start we wondered around up and down the aisles to get a feeling of what was on offer. Multiple cuisine styles my daughter settled for Dumplings I checked out a Corndog, donuts, pastries and a few more bits 😂

The exploiting of almost every food vendor was the most favorite experience. Love the ambience and architectural structure and artwork. Mark it as a priority stop on your trip to the enchanting country.

Nice to see, but not a new.world wonder. Many ok and not so ok restaurants under a giant fresco of vegetables and fruit. Very busy especially in weekends. Next to this a few fish shops and supermarkets. 21 pinchos and the indian restaurants are noteworthy

There are many foodstands, I am sure there must be a serving Vegetarian, or Vegan.
Good luck :)
BTW: Sorry for the late reply, I got stuck in Asia, and now I am stuck in Europe. 😢😢😢

honden toegestaan?

According to the official Markthal website, dogs are allowed, but "they must be kept on a leash, and are the responsibility of the person controlling them". When we were there I didn't see any dogs in the Markthal, and I think that unless the dog is very well-behaved, it might be difficult to control a large dog considering the tempting variety of foods displayed within a short reach!

We are planning a trip to the Netherlands. Amsterdam and the Hsgue
definitely seemed worth a visit but from the things that I’ve seen written about Rotterdam I suspect we could skip that and not miss a whole lot. What do you think?

First of all, Amsterdam is a must see/visit, but it does not represent The Netherlands, The Hague on the other hand has the government buildings but besides that “not much to offer” for sightseeing; whereas other smaller cities like Delft or Leiden in the area still have the “old” feeling of how Holland was hundreds of years ago.
Rotterdam is great city, basically totally rebuilt after WO ll. Typical tourist area worth visiting is Voldendam / Marken.
But then again, any place visiting depends on the weather! Without rain it all be nice and people will treat you friendly and in English anywhere.

It is 2.2km walk. If you have the time: join the views of/from the Erasmusbrug and Leuvenhaven #Recommended
Terminal -> Erasmusbrug -> straight to Leuvenhaven -> right on Blaak -> Markthal
