I enjoy finding commemorative monuments to those who gave their lives (willingly and unwillingly/innocently) in any war. It reminds me that not only is life precious but to never forget- no matter how far removed we are from it- people tragically died during a war.
I appreciated seeing these small but powerful lights in the city. As I walked around enjoying how beautiful the city is now, these lights gently reminded me to stop and remember those lost.

We saw a few of these signs on the streets of the city but had no idea what they meant. We ignored them at first but they kept popping! Later we learnt what they were. They are "flames" symbolising the bombing and destruction of the city centre by the Nazis in World War II and specifically in 1940, which marked the surrender of the country. They are symbolic of the extent of the bombing and subsequent fires, which covered about 12 kilometres around the city. So they mark this so called 12 km border.

Those little red flames that you can see in some of the streets of Rotterdam mark the part of Rotterdam that was bombed during World War II. A nice way of remembering those terrible events.
