Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

- Alanna8 contributionsSuch friendly and attentive staff in a wonderful location in AmsterdamMr Jordaan was extremely accomodating. I had a lovely room overlooking the canals and the staff were all so welcoming and friendly - can’t say I have had any better attentive staff at any other hotel I’ve stayed at. A great location with lots of restaurants and cafes close by.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 May 2023
- LeonhknyHong Kong, China14,495 contributionsAmsterdam canalsJordaan is a quaint neighborhood west of Amsterdam's city center. Full of lovely canals and beautifully restored rowhouses, the area is a perfect place to experience the maritime character of the Dutch city. It is also not crowded and thus allows more relaxing exploration.Visited June 2023Written 5 June 2023
- Melyssa L11 contributionsQuiet, historic and simply beautiful. The Jordaan area of Amsterdam was a great place to stay. Because it is mostly residential, it was quieter than the city center yet still had the charm of the bustling areas of the city. I felt very safe, even at night walking the streets with my 16 year old daughter. There are many cafes, boutiques and canals to visit throughout the streets and the Anne Frank Museum is in the heart of it. This area is also within a 25 minute walk of most major tourist attractions including the Van Gogh Museum, Dam Square, and the Rijksmuseum. We stayed in the Mr. Jordaan hotel which I highly recommend! Definitely check out this part of the city if you plan to visit.Visited June 2023Written 28 June 2023

Learned from a local guide that the direction of the streets is laid out different from the rest of the city's street pattern. In the past, these neighbourhoods were the poorest and dirtiest, and were built that way simply for people not needing to see in along the streets from the more nicer areas.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 August 2023

Easy to walk out and hop on a tram or bus to go elsewhere in the city. We stopped in the mechanical toy store with our kids and they loved it - spent quite a while playing with toys there.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 October 2023

America has Michael Jordan, the UK has Katie Price (formally known as Jordan), the Middle East has the country of Jordan whilst Amsterdam has The Jordaan. This western district of town is super quaint and boasts rows of restored canal side properties and is a very pleasant area to wander around.

This side of the canal is much more laid back than the other rancher side of the canal which is bit more touristy.
On the Jordann there are cafes, restaurants, bars etc. but with a cooler vibes. I love this side of Amsterdam for its totally chill vibes. Perfect for a stroll and for those who prefer a quieter night life.

For me this was the best part of Amsterdam. Try to plan a hotel or restaurant in or near this area of the city.

I mercatini di Natale durano fino al 31 dicembre. Ad Amsterdam ci sono alcuni negozi che vendono tutto l'anno decorazioni natalizie. Il piú bello?

Hello, Any suggestions for walking/touring the area with a wheelchair? My Mom can exit if needed but it's much easier if she doesn't need to. We will most likely start and/or end at Central station. We don't have any particular destination in mind. Any other areas of the city to recommend for walking with a wheelchair? We are not interested in the red-light district (will also be traveling with a child). Thank you.

Hello, I wanted to ask you about the route we will be taking. When are we supposed to get off the boat?? Or maybe we’re gonna take a detour and get back to the Anne Frank House??

Anne Frank museum is a perfect location to get off the boat, just cross the bridge and you’re in the “Jordaan”( French for garden, all the streets have flower and tree names).

Todo es posible pagando. Pero los barcos para hacer el recorrido estan genial y mo son muy caros. Los hay de dia y de noche y tiene un recorrido perfecto de una hora mas o menos. Blue noat esta adaptado para sillas de ruedas !

So you said you stayed on a house boat?"Which quickly caught my eye." Can you give me some information on that? Sounds like a wonderful plan instead of a hotel. I am from the U.S and have NO idea.
Thank You!..Nancy

I just st saw this, I hope you are still planning. I did not stay on a houseboat due to the size of my party (9 people). But I was impressed with the boats I saw for rent. Try AirBNB (not a fan anymore but had lots of great experiences). Or VRBO but not sure they do Europe. There is also the Botel which is a docked boat turned into a motel. If you want a great hotel, we stayed in the Park Hotel - it was the best location and we got Priceline reservations for under $200/night. The rooms were great, service excellent, restaurant too pricey for this trip so we didn’t use it but there were so many options all within a short walk from the hotel.
Glad to answer more questions if you have them.

We are traveling with a 2 year old and 3 adults. My concern is noise and proximity to sights. We would like things to be quiet at night but still be able to easily walk to sights during the day. Will this neighborhood be able to provide both? And is it close enough to take the train to Brussels?

Yes this section of the city is more quiet. It is close to several attractions. But you can also catch the tram which can take you to many parts of the city. Also close enough to Centraal Station where you can catch train to Brussels. I think it would be a perfect neighborhood for staying with children.
