Went for a day trip, water murky and mosquitoes everywhere we walked. Huge clouds of them in the sky. So bad we left after a couple of hours as it was impossible to relax and enjoy the lake.

We are staying in Umbria and spent today at Passignano del Trasimeno, a beautiful lakeside village with fantastic views over the lake. There were several excellent small restaurants, Sottovente highly recommended, and the trip by boat to Isola Maggiore is well worth it.

The lake Trasimeno is just wonderful (mostly on the summer or spring) but you can go there anytime. Stay at Castiglione del Lago, a cozy "paese" with a beautiful view.

Quiet, peaceful, close to nature. A boat trip to one of the islands for example Isola Maggiore is fantastic! You have possibilities for trekking, sailing, eating ice cream or having lunch outside.

A short and disappointing visit to Castiglione and Lake Trasimeno resulted in a quick dash to Montepulciano for supper instead. Wouldn't recommend the former.

It is possible to see the lake and Castiglione del Lago from Montepulciano a few miles away. It takes about an hour from Arezzo to Castelione del Lago, and is well worth the drive. We combined it with Montepulciano and Castiglion Fiorentino to make a...More

It's definitely worth it - especially with kids - and you might find yourself going there several times. Start with Castiglione del Lago on the western side of the lake. Skip the central town and drive along the lakefront... More
