The archives carry a very interesting exposition of the accounting book covers, starting from the 13th century and beyond. The covers are real oil paintings done on carton or paper. Most of them devoted to non-religious subjects. English translations are present. Because of that, in my...More

I had read about the archives years ago & always wanted to visit. Lorella spent the entire hour with just the two of us . We were the only people there who showed up for the free tour. Lorella answered every question and made interesting...More

Whilst the books and documents were as outstanding as in my previous visit, I felt the need to write this review in order to record how different this experience was. I have to say that sadly, on this occasion, the tour was absolutely woeful. The...More

An absolutely amazing archive of the oldest documents I've ever seen. To be able to see and touch a land agreement (barter) from the 700's! Incredible.

Free and open to the public, but there are set entrance times of 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 a.m. Don't miss the view from the balcony, overlooking Piazza del Campo, the main city square!

I am not one for art galleries and museums as a rule but this was recommended and what an interesting hour so it was. Fantastic paintings from 13th century and shelf upon shelf of old accounts. A great view of Il Campo from the balcony

It is tricky to find this absolute gem, but it's an amazing place and a must for anyone interested in books, history, culture or art. It is totally free and today there was no one else there when the tour started at 9.30 so I...More

When in Siena make a trip to the old city archives in Banchi de Sotto. Not easy to find, go inside the courtyard and up the stairs to a locked door. Free visits are offered at 930, 1030 and 1130 am to look at some...More
