St. Catherine passed a large part of her life inside the walls of this stupendous Basilica, which was one of the first to be dedicated to St. Dominic. It was begun by the Dominicans in 1226 on the hill of Camporegio which they had received as a gift from the Malavolti family. Most of the actual rectangular nave and the inside roof with its tranverse beams, all in Gothic Cistercian style, go back to this epoch.

The family house of Saint Catherine is nearby, and this is the church she went to where she had her original visions and inspiration. The highlight is probably the ornate Chapel of Saint Catherine with its beautiful artwork and relics. Can’t see them up close,...More

Yes, odd title, but her history makes this church an interesting site. Her home is not far from here, and the story is compelling.

Have you ever wondered how a head and a finger look like after a few hundred years, being naturally preserved? Probably not, but you're gonna find out!

Pretty amazing that the actual head of this incredible saint is located in the Basilica. It is so cool to see such relics and to be in the very city and space where she lived and walked so long ago. This church has many lovely...More

I was disappointed that a could not take a picture of St Catherine's mummified head but clearly people pray and worship here - it is appropriate to just be respectful. The church was pretty, for me the main attraction was the head. I learned a...More

The outside of this Basilica is not as impressive as many others in northern Italy. Yet the inside is filled with gorgeous artwork. No photos are allowed. The highlight is the memorial of St Catherine, her actual head is on display. Kinda cool, kinda eerie....More

Our tour group enjoyed a lecture about St. Catherine's life outside the Basilica and then entered through the ornate doors. (take some time with the doors, they are marvelous). The interior of the Basilica is wide open with high ceilings, some paintings, and flags. (Catherine...More

This is a special place for general travellers and particularly Dominicans. Couple it with a visit to Catherine's house and read her story before you go, particularly the story of her head.

This Basilica is not a tourist spot, it is a place of reverence, and of prayer. If you are interested in the life of the St Catherine of Siena and Dominican spirituality, this will be a special place for you. There is no entrance fee,...More
