We were exploring outside the city walls when we came across this medieval well. There was no one else around when we visited so is a place to get away from the crowds.

Unique piece of history so worth the walk. Indeed the tranquil walk around the walls is part of the joy. Look carefully into the pools

You have to walk outside the walls to see this system that was used to bring water to San Gimignano. It is worth the walk.

Located outside the walls of the city these wells once provided all the water for the city. You have to walk down quite a steep slope to get to these but it is worth it especially if walking the city walls.

Neat old water source of San Gimignano. Instead of entering the South Gate, walk right along the outside of the walls. Worth the walk and the short hill back up into the city. No crowds.

While at first we were reluctant to make the descent (with the knowledge that a subsequent ascent would be required to return to our hotel!), we were glad we bit the bullet and visited the Fonti medievali. It was a sublimely serene place well below...More

I wish we knew more about this fountain's history. It's a really cool little spot to see. Very steep walk to get to it. Not anything I would see back home.

We entered the city and decided to walk in the direction of the medieval fountains first. We couldn't find them initially but this lead us on the most spectacular way to enter the city - the views from here were extraordinary. Upon leaving we tried...More
