The tower was built at the beginning of the 15th century, during the Florentine domination. It was named as an opposite of the older Ghibelline Tower. It offers the views as far as the sea shore and is well worth the visit.

The surrounds are more interesting as the tower overlooks the river. However you are not allowed to climb the tower.

We walked past the Torre tower as we headed back to our hotel . It is on outskirts of tourist area and not worth making a special journey to see it

If you walk out here you can see the huge thick wall of the old city. It crosses the river just in front of the tower and turns left away from the city for a while.

This is the angle to actually gauge how much the tower is leaning. If you looked at it by itself or without a 90 degree angle object to compare it with, it's hard to see.

The tower is symbolic of the struggles between the Guelf and Ghibelline parties in Italy. The remarkable political history of Tuscany before and during the Renaissance can't be understanding without understanding the Guelfs. The Torre, on the Piazza Tersanaia (not the more famous Torre pictured...More
