We absolutely loved walking, cycling, sitting, general ambling & sightseeing on these walls. Nice & wide to allow for all types of bikes, prams etc with space for slow & fast walkers.
Lined on either side with a row of horse chestnut trees it was a delight to spend time here, we especially liked at the weekend to take our books & sit on one of the many seats at the main slope watching how the people of Lucca, of all ages enjoyed promenading & much more.
You can get a good view of the Palace Pfanner gardens & hire a bike 5 euros / hour, very easy to cycle once you're on the top, as pensioners we pushed ours up first.
Total circumference of the walls is 4km so you can easily do a couple of circuits in an hour.

The walled city walk! An easy walk, plenty of benches to stop, rest, admire the surrounds and the interesting gappy sculptures - all a part of the charm of Lucca. Definitely worth visiting!

Fantastically impressive city wall that is a full 4.2 kilometers long. This makes it one of the most impressive and completely preserved wall structures in Europe. Most of the wall was built between the 17th century and the early 19th century, although there are parts that are significantly older than that. In some places the wall is more than 10 meters high and this brings a fantastic view over the old city of Lucca with its many church towers and red brick roofs. During our visit we walked around the entire wall which is quite easily done. The surroundings are very beautiful, the wall is lined with green trees everywhere. There are cafes where those with tired legs can stop and in our case we benefited from several playgrounds for children. You can easily get up and down from the wall through its many gates located throughout. The six old city gates are particularly beautiful and worthy of attention. The wall is an obvious choice when visiting Lucca.

The beautiful wall brings us back to Lucca each year. We love riding bikes around the wall daily to enjoy the scenery and atmosphere. We always arrive in October for the cool temperature and beautiful fall colors around the wall. There are many beautiful places in Italy, but Lucca has the magic of their wall and we count the days until our next visit.

The city walls on a summers afternoon take a lot of beating . It’s a 5k Circuit , but you can do all or part of it with several places to join. A lot of people hired bikes , which would be fun . Great walk , great views.

Highly recommend circumnavigating the town on a bike on the wall. It’s wide and picturesque, and one can also get off at various ramps to see the town sights.

The second time I've been to Lucca and walked the walls. Just as magical this time as previously. The walls are tree lined with colonnades and even after a dry summer looked good. The walk is about 4km, but from there you can pop down into the town itself if you see something you like as I did with the Piazzo Pffaner attracted by the fountains and greenery. Walking the walls provides a completely different perspective on this lovely little town, as well as seeing how it developed outside of the walled area.

What a hidden treasure Lucca is. Few of the people we know (who travel a lot!) had heard of Lucca but it is certainly well worth the trip to visit. Some suggest it is more worthwhile than Pisa!
With a great history going back thousands of years, the town itself still looks much has it has for many hundreds of years, it is a little gem with plenty to keep you interested. The city walls are huge and still completely intact, and the amphitheatre in the centre is great, not to mention the cathedral and plenty of other buildings of interest.
A superb day out here.

Beautiful trees and a way to see and experience the city of Lucca. The locals frequent there and it’s a great peaceful way to get some excercise

This is a must-do in Lucca. We took the walk around the walls during a drizzly morning one day. The skies were interesting and, yes, I got a little wet, but even though I was raised in Kansas, I don't melt;-D

What’s the best way to travel from Pisa airport to Lucca?
Joe P
Bristol, RI338 contributions
You have 3 options. 1. By train which is the easiest way, about 25 minutes away. 2. By bus, a little longer and not as comfortable but the cheapest way or 3. The way I recommend, a little more expensive but just so convenient call a company called Luccalimo, driver picks you up wherever you want and drops you off at your request. We used the company twice and were very pleased.

At least 2 bike hire places located close to the entry/exit points of the wall. Easy to spot in such a small town.

Un risciò 4 posti costa 12 Euro mentre a 6 posti 18 Euro all'ora. Non so dirti se sarà possibile noleggiarlo anche a ottobre, ma se lo sarà e se sarà un bell'autunno ne varrà sicuramente la pena!

We will be taking a train to Luca with our luggage. Is there a place to store the luggage while touring the city?

As far as I know there is no luggage storage at teh train station. However there is a bike rental place nearby that stores luggage.
touristcenter lucca
I also saw a 3 year old post about a bike shop. Not sure if it is the same one.
I stopped in to the bike hire shop and enquired about luggage storage. The hours are 9 am - 6 pm, 7 days a week. It is €3/24 hr/bag and you can leave bags there for multiple days. As you come out of the main station exit/entrance, looking to your left you will see a pasticceria, a large set of wooden doors, and the Rent Bike/ Left Luggage sign. There are also some large signs here and there pointing the way.
