Overview
More
This is not your usual football match, this rough and ready match dates back to the 16th century, and is held in a sand-filled piazza in front of the Santa Croce church. Players wear medieval-style costumes and can punch, kick and elbow their way toward to the goal. The match is played on the feast day of Florence’s patron saint, Saint John the Baptist.

I wish I could merely comment on the previous post but I hope this helps someone else. I went to Box Office Toscana in person to see about tickets as they were the official seller and the only online option was a 500 euro package....More

We just happened to be in the right place at the right time and got tickets to this yearly event. What an extraordinary spectacle!! The costumes, the music, the flags, the athletes all create an atmosphere for this ancient traditional event. A bit violent, but...More

This is as close to a gladiator match as you can get. I heard it described as WWE/Rugby/Soccer combined. You have to turn your head to the violence. Interested and historical. This was Cosimo the First's (Ducal) passion.

I have visited it last year. It is very funny to see all these dressed men with their colorful old time costumes. There is a lot of music and joy. I felt like being in another century.

I remember the first game of historic soccer did not even get a chance to finish because too many of the players were sent to the hospital! It was rdiculous and I thought the whole was quite silly but today I saw the parade and...More
