The main square of Taormina - stop here for a beautiful view of the surrounding water, island and Mount Etna! Food places surrounding this spot are also really lovely. Definitely a must see if you're coming here for the first time.

This hard to miss tower sits atop the Catania gate, entry point to the old town and the Corso Umberto. It is another defining structure adding to the significance of the Piazza Aprile.

Piazza IX Aprile is the main square of Taormina. This famous square is located in the middle of the Corso Umberto I. It has some nice old buildings: San Giorgio Church and San Giuseppe Church and the clock tower with a Madonna mosaic (Torre dell’ Orologio). It’s also a gate to the Old town. It’s worth a photo.

The most significant square in Taormina is the piazza 9th of April and the clock tower is an important component of its beauty. The Medieval tower is part of the narrow city gate and it does separate the Medieval part of Taormina from the Greco-Roman part.

After France's sun king (Louis 14th) destroyed the original Medieval tower in 1676, it took 3 years to rebuild it. There is a bell tower inside (somewhere) and the bells are rung twice a year: once when the mayor is elected and once for the celebration of their patron saint (Pancrazia), a 14-year old martyr who was beheaded.

It is a very attractive portal to cross under. The mosaic Madonna (Byzantine) is absolutely beautiful. When the tower was destroyed, it is hard to know if it was taken down to the stones and this is part of the 1677 rebuild. The Byzantine era did end about 200 years earlier so this may have been part of the original tower.

This clock tower and gate sits astride Corso Umberto, at one end of Piazza IX Aprile. It was built in the 12th or 13th century on the ruins of the roman wall.

Note the mosaic of Madonna and Child.

The clock tower is also the entry to the old city. From here on it feels like you time travel, the wonderful Corso Umberto will take to the most important places in Taormina.

Attractive clock tower at the edge of Piazza IX Aprile also known as Porta di Mezzo as it's halfway along Corso Umberto. Built in C12th on Greco-Roman foundations, it was rebuilt in 1679 which is when the clock was added. Nothing amazing but you'll see this if you are walking through the main town.

In front of the clock tower you have Piazza IX Aprile, so called because on April 9, 1860, rumors stating that Giuseppe Garibaldi had landed on Sicily, to liberate the island from the Bourbon king. Unfortunately, the rumors were false, and he arrived in western Sicily a month later, on May 9.
On the other side is the preserved medieval Taormina where the streets are more narrow and even the stores fronts have kept their medieval character.
