Wonderful church at the start of Corso Umberto. worth a short visit - nice and peaceful when it gets busy in town- which it always does!

Santa Caterina is a really quaint little church with some of the original anchoring foundations on show in the church. Nice layout and chandeliers with great artwork.

Beautiful church as are many here in Taormina. I enjoyed a peaceful moment here in amongst the hustle and bustle of the world outside. Once you have enjoyed this lovely place of worship… walk around the back and you will find the Odeon , another Taormina Gem!

We were walking from the Greek Theatre when we saw this small, simple church nearby. It’s a bit shabby outside but it’s worth a visit. Inside it’s nice and peaceful and has an impressive carved wooden ceiling. It’s free and it takes only a few minutes to look around.

Construction estimates are a bit sketchy but records suggest that between 1610 an 1663 the church here on site took on its present life. There was a restoration circa 1787..
Saint Catherine is honored here in this church. Outside on the facade is a statue of the saint, standing with a palm frond in one hand (symbol that she is a martyr) and in her other hand, she holds a sword. Her eventual demise was by beheading.
What was of particular interest is that under the sword she carries, her foot rests on the head of a sinister looking bad-guy with a crown and a mustache (and we wondered about that). Here, Catherine has triumphed over evil, the message would seem to say.
The church interior is a striking contrast between the bright white walls and pillars and the very dark wood trusses in the ceiling span.
Technically, the Middle Ages would have ended by the 1600's when the Baroque era began and the arts began to flourish. So this is a transitional church.

Adjacent to the square where you turn to go to the amphitheater is this unassuming church, which is open to the public and charming. It was a bit dark on the inside, but there was a feeling of serenity here.

Wonderful little church with some unusual pillars inside. It is small but oozes character and history. It only takes a few minutes to look around it and certainly worth visiting.

This is a beautiful little Church along Corso Umberto. It was built in the first half of the 17th century in Baroque style on the ruins of a small Roman theater, the Odeon. The partial remains of the theater can be seen behind the church.

I visited Chiesa di Santa Caterina in Taormina in August 2019. It is another nice church located near Corso Umberto and worth a quick visit. It has a nice interior and altar. After you have visited the church you can go to a Tourist Information office and get maps and information on Taormina which is useful.

A few minutes is all you need to appreciate this lovely little gem - very typical of many churches in the area - but charming nonetheless.
