This nice old palace is stands on the eastern side of Corso. It’s not only a palace, but it’s a historic villa with an Arab tower with portholes. It has a rich history: the first Sicilian parliament met here in 1411. Unfortunatelly it was closed, so we couldn’t go inside.

There is no denying that the uber-strong crenellated architecture will stop anyone in their tracks. It sure did stop us. It has a storied history, part of which was as an Arab fortress. The windows are divided by columns and have a distinctive Islamic peak to them.

But the tower is more Norman. In the final analysis, the Arabs, Normans, and Spaniards have left their mark. But these are relatively the new kids on the block. The history on this spot goes so much further back to Greek and Roman occupation.

This present structure is pure Medieval (with a captial "M") and dates back to the 10th and 14th centuries. Only 677 years ago (1545), the Corvaja family ceased ownership of this historic treasure. It has more contemporary uses today.

It is very, very close to the Ancient Theatre of Taormina which (when you go there to see it and read about it) is all of Greek origin. This site for the palace was once a Greek Agora (open place of assembly) before it became a Roman Forum.

It is a beauty and so well maintained. Visiting takes a little planning. It was not open this time around for us.

We went there for a visit but we were obliged to change our plan. The palace was closed and nobody told us the reason or for how long!

For its small size it packs a big punch. Intetesting architecture and history. Includes information office.

One of the reasons for visiting Sicily is to experience the immense history of the area. This building captures several of the key historic periods in one structure.

One of the more interesting buildings in Taormina is the Palazzo Corvaja, named after a local noble family. What will strike one is a massive square tower with battlements, that has been integrated into the palace. Its delicate arched windows comparted by thin columns tell a story of Arab times in Sicily.

Stepping inside one will see a crouched marble lion on the ground, then an open staircase, which leads to an upper floor. Its balcony has by the exterior a marble relief of Adam and Eve and their subsequent expulsion from paradise.

This is now part of a tourist center and art exhibits in the tourist area. We were informed that it was built in the 10th century and has reliefs on the walls.

As you enter on the right is the tourist center with interesting carts and large puppets to looks at.

The building itself is exceptionally interesting mixing Arab and Norman styles but nobody could get in. Throughout our whole stay it was closed with no explanation.
