This impressive cathedral was built around the ancient temple of Athina that was built in 480 BC after the battle of Imera from the tyrrant of Gelon after the win of Greeks against Karthagians. Although the exterior of the church has totally baroque style and...More

This is one of the highlights of Ortygia. The cathedral dates back thousands of years and displays Greek, Roman and Baroque architecture and decorations. Do not miss touring this cathedral inside and out.

The Cathedral is one of the best example of the conversion of Greek and Roman temples into holy places in Sicily. It was built on the marvellous limestone Temple of Athena in the fifth century BC. In the 800's it became a mosque with the...More

The church is very beautiful from the outside. They want you to pay an entrance fee to go inside. There are enough other churches in town that don't charge.

I had the benefit of being the first visitor of the day when I went. Costs 3 euro but money well spent. If honest I prefer the outside to the interior but an awesome place.

The cathedral started out as a Greek Doric Temple. The original columns are still visible both inside and out. It was converted into a Mosque in 878, then converted back when the Normans controlled the area. The inside and outside are both architecturally beautiful.

Enjoyed mass here on a Sunday morning then explored the church. The preserved Greek columns are amazing.

If you go no where else while in Ortigia please take time to walk through the cathedral.... it is so beautiful. See the inside during the day but come back to see how pretty at night.

The Cathedral of Syracuse has 2400 years of history and is a definite 'must-see'. Starting out as a Greek temple it is one of the oldest known Doric monuments. It was built for the tyrant Gelon in the V century BC to thank the goddess...More
