We have been touring Italy using instinct, guide books and serendipity with mixed success. Venice does not work well with these methods.
We are happy we went with 2 guided tours, 2 hours each, with Monica Poli at Litera Tours at the recommendation of a friend. We did the walking and wine tour with Andrea, and a stellar photography tour with Vinny. We really got to see the city, away from the crowds with great backgrounders.
I was worried about the photo tour, and I bugged my wife to lug along her nice camera, only to have Vinny show us how to take great shots with an iPhone 6, and believe me, Venice is the place to take great shots.

I found this tour offer right before I left for a three city Italian trip. I had been there years before but was not a camera nut at that time. Now I wanted to take pictures but not the ordinary photos of a rookie tourist. I was booked with Francesca and was absolutely delighted with the two hour walking insight into Venice which had not been a favorite my last visit. Great weather enhanced the experience and Francesca pointed out unique shots of Venice. We came upon two wedding celebrations, a master masque maker at work who allowed us to snap him finishing one of the carnival masks, I learned to take a picture into the sun and achieve a great shot, all peppered with tales of Venice. As I always do I run late and between working my way from my hotel by bus and water bus and wandering into the plaza I was tardy but Francesca was sympathetic and ready to take off on the tour without missing a beat. I highly recommend this way to see Venice if you have only a short time there or even if longer it will help set the mood.

My husband and I were guided around quieter parts of Venice by Andrea. As part of our tour we tried "Gianduiotto con Panna", an absolute must if you like chocolate! It was a wonderful introduction to the beauty of the city, away from the crowds around San Marco. Andrea did a wonderful job pointing out things we surely would have missed if out on our own, or even in a group tour. We did a group tour the next day and it wasn't even in the same ballpark. We highly recommend!

I booked the Casanova Tour and Mask Lesson from Litera Tours and it was a lot of fun. My guide, Gina, was fantastic. We embarked on a two hour walking tour tracing the steps and life of Giacomo Casanova. She also gave me a a great history lesson on how Venice was founded and built...very interesting stuff!!! Along the way there was some great chocolate tasting. What was great about this tour was the fact that Gina took me to places where hardly any tourists ventured to. The third hour of the tour I spent at the mask making shop called Ca'Macana, where I got a chance to paint and design my own mask. This was the highlight of the tour. I came away with knowing more about the city of Venice and a great keepsake that I will treasure for years to come. I absolutely recommend this tour.

Venice is just the type of place which is made for discovering on foot (unless you're prepared to spend an extortionate amount getting around on a gondola all day), and if you love photography and want to get the most out of the less touristy parts of Venice (they do exist actually!) then this tour is your sort of thing.

I was surprised to find myself the only person taking the tour that particular day, and ended up running late, but the photographer, Vinicio, was very patient and waited just for me to arrive! I was informed that normally these tours tend to have a very small number of people anyway, and that way you are probably going to get more out of it by having the photographer's full attention. So we went on a very lengthy walking tour of the lesser-known areas of Venice, which it turns out are amazing opportunities for photography.

By the end I had done more than enough walking for a long time but I got some fantastic photos stored on my camera so it was worth it. Thanks!

I've been on several occasions in Venice and I wanted to experience something new, out of the traditional tourist "routes", so this winter I turned to Litera Tours for a tour of Goldoni and I was really impressed by the skill and sympathy of the guide; 2 intense hours of walking with detailed and interesting explanations. And finally, a fabulous chocolate enjoyed in a typical inn (impossible to detect without knowing it), really a blessing given the cold day! In short, absolutely recommended.

It was our first trip to Italy. There were so many details and plans to make I didn't know where to start. I contacted Monica and was immediately impressed with all the details and help I was given.
Litera tours planned private cooking & private photographer on the backstreets of Italy. Places where tourist don't usually go, Along with other tours. This was an amazing vacation and Monica took care of all the details, quickly, professionally and perfectly. We plan to go back and would not make any plans without contacting Litera tours. Other companies just can't compare!!!!!!!!!!!! Excellent serve, attention to detail, and a trip beyond our dreams.

I wanted to organise something special as a birthday gift for a dear friend visiting Venice and I was advised to get in touch with Litera Tours. Well Monica was just great! She combines the great professionality, to the very unique literal touch, to the personal warmth! I also wanted to organize something a little bit more special for my friend and her boyfriend and she was great in advising and organising something particular for them (she organised a litera- tour on a gondola for the two of them on a sunset, making sure to be personally there to greet them. They ended up LOVING IT! So strongly advised!

Our tour guide, Andrea, was exceptional. He took us through the backstreets, over quaint bridges and was very knowledgeable about Venice, being a native. After being on several tours in other cities the individual tour with my husband, two granddaughters and myself was wonderful. We learned so much about the history of Venice and saw places other tourists never see including a visit to a local fish and fruit market and the coffee bar where Casanova was said to have spent time. We were limited on time but if we go again, I will definitely take another of the tours. It is money well spent!!

Litera tours owner Monica Poli created several fun and fabulous tours for us during out time in Venice. 1. An afternoon with a wine expert of Veneto wines. We had a one on one personal wine course and tasting at a local tavern to learn about the wine region and wines of the Veneto. 2hours turned into 4 hours! What a great way to spend a Venetian afternoon? 2. Hidden gems of Venice. Our guide showed us secret areas of the old Venice, the time of the great families and their hiding places, drinking and party establishments as well as how the present day Venetians travel and get around their beautiful city. 3. A day in Verona and eating/wine tasting in the oldest restaurant in Verona. Fabulous day seeing the sights, walking and learning about Verona history and then spending the afternoon eating and drinking wine the Italian way! A six course lunch with wine pairings! Litera Tours pays attention to detail and makes sure that you get the experience you are looking for. Thank you Litera! I want to go back to Venice!
