The area
Neighbourhood: San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

Get the vaporettos to see the city. €20 for a day pass (one trip is €7.50), and take it all in! Take a photo of a water taxi map for when you need it, easy to follow! Some stops have two, or three, so check which direction you need to go before waiting at the wrong stop

Most important "road" in Venice and definitely a must-see. We totally recommend to take the waterbus or watertaxi or a gondola to see the whole Canal Grande. Also having strolls next to the Canal Grande is really, really nice. So if you're in Venice, don't miss it.

You just have to see it to know how wonderful it is. We took the water taxi to our location and it was so worth the extra few pounds. Best start to a lovely short holiday. x

Venice Grand Canal is a lovely way to explore the city on a boat.
Unfortunately, the ride is ever so slow and it takes forever to get from one side of the city to the other.

Great views as expected, but there is a LOT of watercraft traffic of all varieties. I was surprised people can rent and use watercraft on the canal.

The Canal Grande is what makes Venice, something you must experience on a slow gondola ride passed beautiful architecture, busy waterside restaurants and the many decorative gondolas. Booked our canal trip direct with the gondolier facing the Omnibus Restaurant at a fixed price of 80 euros for 30 munutes, much cheaper the pre booking with an agent. I know its a tourist thing to do but you,ll regret not enjoying a once in a lifetime trip along the canal.

Venice has nice buildings, some quaint, some historic, but really it’s the canals that make Venice so unique. Nothing sums this city better than the Grand Canal. Walk up and down it, eat at a restaurant by it, travel on it on a boat, or if you have money to burn, do a gondola ride. If you do decide to do it, make sure to do it near sunset - 30 min before. It will cost 100 euros (20 more than the usual 80) for a 30 min ride but the extra 20 is well worth it for the amazing lighting for photos and less traffic. It’s an expensive ride, but since you’re only going to do it once in your life, might as well experience it!

The Canal Grande is always stunning - it's just so unique! And yes, Gondola rides are tourist traps and expensive, but where else can you do one?
IT always amazes me how all those Gondola and boats and deliveries and vaporetti manage to navigate traffic on the canal !

The Grand Canal snakes through Vebice and starts at the lagoon near Santa Lucia Station and ends after a 3.4 KM journey near San Marco. It caries loads of water traffice, is 5 M deep on average and a lovely brown green color. Not to be missed if in Venice.
