This island is still a religious area, and as such you are requested to keep silent as you walk around it. The experience is unique, and in truth does not take up too much of your tourist time, but it is worth doing once during...More

We loved it. A taxi boat brought us. Strolling along old buildings and streets.Beautiful views over the lake. Keep in mind the departure times otherwise you will wait a long time for the next boat. There is only 1 restaurant on the island with limited...More

We were traveling October 2017 to lake orta. Enjoyed a great weather and due to the fact that it is off season, most places are not crowded. The island is a magical getaway. Has no restaurants or coffeehouses.

If you wish to have some quiet, just go to this small island. Indeed, it's not a big one, there's no restaurants (there's 1 acutally) and shops - and this is a huge compliment (I would seriously ban the cheap souvenir shops out of the...More

Well worth the visit. The church is stunning and the circular silent walk with its inspirational signs is great,.

Lovely short boat trip to this picturesque island. We spent 2 hours there soaking in the views and the walk with its contemplative and inspirational signs.

This island is a disappointment. True, we went in October so maybe it is livelier at other times. But if you are not interested in the Basilica, then don’t bother going. We saw one shop (with lace, thimbles, cards, etc.) and one restaurant, that was...More

This is an island completely different from the islands in Lago Maggiore. Those are filled with people and shops with things of low quality. This island is quiet and silent. There is a way to walk in silence in a meditative way. Do not miss...More

Wander around the island in either direction and read the signs. One direction is the way of silence and the other direction is the way of meditation. This is a very meaningful place to visit. The nuns care for these signs, but are like ghosts,...More

If you are visiting lake Orta it only makes sense to visit San Giulio Island as its the center of attention. You can easily take a boat from piazza Motta and get to the tiny Island. Don’t have great expectations as it is really small...More

There is a convenient covered pay parking at the entrance to the village of Orta. It is very convenient because there is little way to go on foot to get to the marina. However, I do not remember the cost of parking.

The boat goes to the island and back. I think there is another type of boat that does a longer trip around some of the lake.

First thing, car parking is as you drive down to Orta, there are open air and multi storey pay car parks which are quite convenient. It is a short walk down to the town and you should enjoy that too, many interesting places... More
