We only had time to visit the surgeons house (sited just outside the museum) and the basement with the archaeological collection but must say well worth a visit and if I get the chance I will return to see more.

The detail of some of the exhibits is breath taking, tools and mosaics to mention just two.

Good signage in Italian and English. The day we attended it was not too busy and very pleasant to walk around.

It is also close to the town centre so you can also visit other places of interest or just have a walk around the lovely town centre too.

I was really amazed with the exhibits in the museum, such variety and focus on the history of the region. The mosaics are incredible and a must to see the exhibit of the finds in Domus di Chirurgo, entrance fee includes the Domus site nearby. Staff were very helpful.

I didn't expect to see much before going inside, but I was really surprised by the vast amount of archaeological items displayed. The sections related to the Roman Empire and Middle Ages were well explained (most of them had information in english) and organised in many and many rooms. The whole staff was helpful and directed me to the other floors and briefly explained which order I should follow. As a plus, there was one room dedicated to Fellini's book of dreams. Although it was nice to have practically the whole space for me (I saw 4 other visitors during the 90 minutes I was there, but I was the only foreigner), it's a shame there are just a few people visiting. This museum deserves a lot more for the great collection, effort and the way it's organised.

This museum is a must see in Rimini. Exhibits trace the history of the city. There is also beautiful art to admire. Nearby are the ruins of the surgeon's house. Your ticket also covers admission to the ruins. Items found in the excavation of the surgeon;s house are displayed in the museum.

The Museum starts from the cobbles chipped by man one million years ago. Then all the stages of civilization up to the Roman age up to the threshold of the Middle Ages in the Archaeological Section. There are lavish mosaics, amphorae, and bricks made in kilns opened by the first entrepreneurs from Rimini, the exceptional set of surgical instruments and the splendid glass picture from the Surgeon’s House, along with everyday objects and even small pawns used as entrance tickets for the Anfiteatro (Amphitheater). The Medieval and Modern Section collects works mostly coming from the many religious buildings suppressed between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries or affected by the fury of wars and earthquakes. Witness of the local artistic history from the eleventh century to the early twentieth century, the Museum offers the thrill of discovering the Malatesta Rimini through the paintings of the 14th century Rimini School, the Pietà by Giovanni Bellini, the works by Agostino di Duccio and Ghirlandaio, and being fascinated by the pictorial experience of the Romagna’s seventeenth century in paintings by Cagnacci, Centino and Guercino

We went in after visiting the Roman Surgeons House as the 150 instrument finds are kept here. My sister-in-law and I loved this. The reconstruction of the house was fantastic for the children to picture what they had just seen in real life. Even the 2 year old wowed at the rooms.
I was lucky to have my sister in law who is natively Italian to translate the items labels but if you did not have this luxury there are descriptive boards in English but individual items are only in Italian. Still an amazing place to visit and see some fantastic Roman finds.

The downstairs section covers the Roman period and is as you would expect from a museum. Upstairs the galleries showcase a hidden gem of Rimini; hundreds of amazing paintings line the walls of the old museum building.

Worth spending an hour or two, the Roman section has description in English, but if you don't speak Italian then you're left to appreciate the art upstairs for what it is. Definitely grab a free guidebook for some insight into this.

For 7€ you also get entry to the archaeological site across the street, "The Surgeons House", which is worth a visit for the mosaics alone.

I think the museum is interesting, but there are no interactive elements, no documentary footage etc. which would give the museum a welcome lift!

Great little (well, not so little to be fair!) museum! Its a shame most people who visit Rimini (or even people who live there!) dont know about this absolute gem!
This city has a very rich history and although a lot of its best historic buildings were destroyed by the bombs in World War II (and sadly never rebuilt/restored), the Museum still preserves some of the glory of Rimini's past in its art collections.
From prehistory through the Roman era (a very large and extremely interesting section of the museum), to the middle ages and the glorious Renaissance period (some big names in the Pinacoteca), the 1600s and up to the modern days, the visitor can explore the history of the city and discover that Rimini has more to offer than just an overcrowded beach and noisy nightclubs.
The Museo della Città should definitely be advertised more and more effort and care (and funds!!) should be put towards its maintenance and development.
Highly recommended!

Every Wednesday the Museum is open for free. That is when we went for a magical 20 mins before closing time.

Very much enjoyed our visit. Focussed on local history, it also has noted art works by regional painters as well as a pieta by Bellini.

For an additional modest fee (I remember 1 Euro), you can visit the Roman ruins next door of a doctor's house with fine floor mosaics
