We came on purpose to see special mosaics from a Byzantine palace who's is nowadays about three meters under street level. Great archeological work and well conserved mosaics from about 2.000 years ago were impressive.

The museum houses an excavated mosaic floor from the Roman period, which makes it older than the Byzantine mosaics at San Vitale and other sites. However, you can see better Roman floors elsewhere, so it is worthwhile but not essential.

These were discovered around 2002 when the city was repairing sewer lines. The display is extensive and is he footprint of a wealthy Roman villa. One must enter a former churchto access the museum. There is a good video at the beginning of the visit.
