The Palazzo Ducale has been bastardized by the generations that assumed control once the Este family died out. It is heartbreaking to see how the rooms were ruined with modern lighting, pressed flooring, cheap furniture. And half of the rooms you visit are filled with...More

My hotel host said I had to see the marble bust of Duke Alfonso d'Este by Alfonso Lombardi. Such beauty. The galleries are a smorgasbord of paintings, sculpture and musical instruments from the 16th and 17th century. A must if you visit Modena. The map...More

This historical huge building dating from Renancentism period is one of the highlights of a visit to Modena, and the square and surrounding buildings are a great companion to this magnificent building

Imposing Palazzo Ducale, former home of the Dukes of Este, dominates beautiful Piazza Roma. Gorgeous Baroque facade and a sheer size of the palace is very impressive. It houses the Military Academy now and is not opened to general public. We have been told at...More

We did not enter, based on advice from previous reviewers, but found the outside really attractive and typical of the area's palazzo's. Easy to fit in a visit as is between the station and the centre - kids of all ages will love the water...More

It's just off one of Modena's main shopping streets so it isn't hard to find. Pretty to look at but I gather the interior is not worth the effort

The history of the family Estense is also the history of Modena. They ruled this area for a couple of hundred years.

I enjoyed spending time here as part of exploring Modena as I was just leisurely spending some time. I did not make use of a tour guide but still enjoyed the visit.

Beautiful to behold from the outside as you stroll throughout the historic city center, the old building interior has been now converted to mundane modern offices.

Home of the Ducale Palace, a magnificent building which is still in use today as a college, in the palazzo there are many places to sit, relax and have a drink or a snack, there are also many shops to window shop

The building is gorgeous, topped with loads of statuary, and fronted by what is now a large piazza with a couple of fountains and a reflecting pool. If you call ahead you can get a tour on the weekends. But if that doesn't fit with...More
