The stone altar is astounding
Oct 2019
Make your way to this church up steps near the cathedral. The altar is truly magnificent. There is also a room of ecclesiastical treasures . A must see.

This is a very impressive church and definitively a must attraction in this city. Burgos is full of beautiful, interesting and charming places everywhere you go.

Small church near the cathedral
Oct 2018 • Friends
This small church is located very close (just above) the cathedral. The main highlight is the incredible floor to ceiling retablo (altarpiece). This is jam-packed with carved figures, processions and a variety of objects and is absolutely fascinating. The price of admission here is very low and, if you are in the area, you should not miss visiting this church, if only for a short while.

3 churches worthwhile to visit
Oct 2018 • Couples
Other than the cathedral, there are 3 churches, all much smaller, that one can visit in the old centre of Burgos. San Nicolas de Bari, is just above the cathedral, and the easiest to find. It has an amazing altar piece, reaching the ceiling. It is nearly monochrome, but considering its size to that of the church, it means that it is not overwhelming the space. The church is nice and peaceful. The furthest church is San Gil, and like San Nicolas, still in use as a church. Opening times are not really those that are advertised, so you need some luck. This is a nice gothic style church with several barok chapels, and several altar pieces vying with each other for being the most beautiful. The third church, San Esteban, is close to the San Nicolas church, and is no longer an active church. Rather it is a museum of altar pieces. Opening hours here are more reliable. Altar pieces from a variety of styles and times, but all from the nearby area, are on display here, as well as some church treasures. All 3 are well worth a visit, and there is a combined ticket for all 3, but Monday or Tuesday afternoons entrance is supposedly free.

Iconic site in Burgos
Jul 2018 • Couples
Burgos is full fo incredible and ancient treasures. Not least of these is the small and very old church of San Gil and San Nicolas. The place oozes history and mystery. It pays homage to obscure saints that passed through or resided in this city. Its worth a visit and it won't take very long.

A wonderful surprise and well worth a visit.

The carving of the high alter so delicate and to have survived is a miracle.
The virgin feeding the baby Jesus so warm and loving.
The virgin on her own, could be by one of the old masters of the Renaissance just so evocative.

Very ornate and beautiful
Mar 2018 • Solo
Not the grandeur of Burgos cathedral in size, but this is a cosy and very intricately decorated church close by the big cathedral.

If you are visiting the cathedral, do not miss this

There's more to Burgos than its magnificent Cathedral and San Gil is one place you can't miss! The main altar carved in alabaster is simply spectacular! See it for yourselves!

Worth a short visit

I happened by this UNESCO world heritage site while wandering around. It was open so I went in. There must be a history behind it because it looks like any of a thousand other churches throughout Spain. Supposedly there is a charge to enter, but nobody was there when I went in. I didn't find it to be special, but that's just my opinion.
