as a tourist location. Image seeking, must have a selfie taken spot. Diasappointing, most especially since a large external convention was taking place, obscuring what is an excellent piece of architecture.

My visit to the Place du Capitole in Toulouse was a simply magnificent experience that enchanted me from the first sight. As soon as I laid eyes on this iconic square, I was immediately captivated by its elegant charm and lively atmosphere.
Place du Capitole is the vibrant heart of Toulouse, where history and modern life come together harmoniously. The emblematic buildings that surround it, notably the Hôtel de Ville and the Théâtre du Capitole, add a touch of architectural grandeur to the whole. The ornate facades and sculpted details are an invitation to admiration.
The hustle and bustle of the place was a treat to the senses. The terraces of cafes and restaurants offer an ideal place to relax, people-watch and enjoy the bustling city life. The central fountain adds a refreshing and pleasant note, attracting visitors and creating a natural gathering point.
Place du Capitole is also a place for cultural and artistic encounters. The events, markets and exhibitions that take place there add a touch of animation and diversity to the experience. I was delighted to be able to explore the artisan stalls and sample the local cuisine during my visit.
The central location of the square makes it an ideal starting point for discovering other sites of interest in Toulouse. I appreciated how easily I could travel to other neighborhoods and attractions from this central square.

No one should leave Toulouse without having visited (and free of charge) this place which is the Capitole which notably houses the Town Hall.
It's majestic.
The paintings are huge and magnificent.
The wedding hall is impressive.
At times, modestly, we could believe ourselves in the hall of mirrors at Versailles, without the mirrors.
A must-visit!

The Capitole is Toulouse’s City Hall. Therefore, most of the time it’s not open to visitors, especially on Saturday, when weddings are celebrated. Sunday is the best day to enjoy the wonderful architecture dating back to the 16th century.
The inside yard, the great staircase and the “salle des illustres” or hall of fame are the well known attractions. Do not forget to have a look at the place where Duke of Montmorency was executed and the interesting paintings by Henri Martin.
A must see in Toulouse.

The Théâtre du Capitole, one of France's most prestigious opera venues, is located in the same building as city hall, and the Orchestra national du Capitole de Toulouse. The Capitole with its 28m-long façade was built in the 1750s, using the beautiful pink & white local brick to achieve this architectural wonder. There are 8 columns, representing the original 8 "capitouls" or city magistrates, dating back to the 12th Century, installed either side of the grand entrance.
In the late-19th-century Salle des Illustres (Hall of the Illustrious) was added. In 1995 automobiles were banned, making the square a pedestrian walkway (there is a Metro stop hear by!) complete with beautiful in/outdoor cafes, and a weekly market.
To gain entrance you have to go to the middle of the Capitoluim, where all the flags are flying. After a brief security check, walk through the court yard and the theatre du Capitole is on the second floor. As we climb up the main hall stairwell we were impressed with the unparalleled beauty, of the frescos on the ceilings and walls. There are many paintings in different styles, and local artist Henri Martin has quite a collection of large murals on display. The first performance in the theater was in 1736 by Guillaume Cammas. But it was not popular and the theater fell into neglect, it was revamped in 1818, But suffered major fire damage during the 1914-1918 war and was rebuilt in 1923. Today the reception area was modernized in 1996 and seating be made for 1156 seats.
TIP: Go early in the morning while the light is just right and no tourist to spoil your photos.

If the capitol building is open, it is free to go in and see the incredible murals and sculptures. You will have to go through security first where they check your bag, coat, purse, etc. I had a bottle of water in my back pack, but they were ok with letting me keep it.
There are two floors to see. Incredible opulence in architecture, sculpture and huge paintings. A couple huge mirrors directly across from each other make for a cool optical illusion. Definitely worth a stop!
Right outside the capitol building is a department of tourism office with free information and a very small gift shop.
In the huge cement square outside the capitol building there are restaurants. On Wednesdays they let people set up tents to sell stuff. The prices at these open air markets are incredibly low compared to regular stores. You can buy African jewelry and bags, leather and furs, sunglasses, and various clothing. Most of it costs between 10 E and 20 Euros.
On busy days they close off the surrounding streets to let pedestrians walk around safely.
When we were there they closed off the square one night for a pickle ball tournament, that had live music and such, but it wasn’t open to the public.

Like much of Toulouse, this place promises much but delivers little. You can go into 2 or 3 rooms with some old paintings on the walls, but they are pretty mundane. Don't bother. In fact, give Toulouse a miss altogether if you have a choice, it's a filthy, smelly place with little to see or do.

Although I am writing the review in the name of Theatre du Capitole , however I must say that it is really the review of the impressive building at Place du Capitol, of which Theatre is only a part.
We were in Toulouse in last Christmas and stayed 5 nights here. Almost everyday we came here, not to see the opera but to feel the lively crowd. The square is very impressive with a brick and marble 16th century building called Donjon du Capitol which also contains town hall. There was no entry fee.
We went inside the hall(not the opera) on our second day morning. There was a high level security who checked the bags and we entered. The ground floor was full with Christmas decorations with a Christmas tree. There was a big cross on the floor which represented a clock in early days Then we came to an very impressive stairway which is called great stairway, which was leading to the great hall. The first room was used for wedding receptions which is decorated with beautiful paintings. There were many impressive paintings of 14th century. In the great hall, it had 3 paintings of love- at 20,40 and 60 years..
Then in the hall we had seen many painting. The impressive was paintings of 3 seasons.
After that we had seen the council chambers with many more paintings.
The right wing of the building houses the Theatre du Capitol which was closed on that day.

A visit to Place du Capitole is an absolute must for any Toulouse visitor. The square is dominated by the impressive brick and marble town hall. You can go inside for free. It’s worth it just to look at the friezes and paintings.
Thankfully, the powers that be have ensured that the corporate logos of all the retail outlets on the square (including MacDonalds) are in keeping with the overall Neoclassical building style, so there are no modern eyesores. There is an underground car park right on the square, but you hardly notice it as everything, colours and styles all seem to blend in nicely.
I particularly like to be in the Square between 6 and 7pm as the sun lights up the entire building in a very special way. I recommend a sundowner at the hugely popular Florida Brasserie where you’ll find a good mix of locals and tourists. You'll be grateful for the cold vapour jets under the sun shades keeping you cool in the height of summer.
The cobbled rue du Taur, one of the oldest streets in Toulouse, leads off the Square towards St. Sernin Church (3-4 mins in flat shoes). Behind the Square itself and just before the main drag of shops, you’ll find the tourist office, metro station and a small children’s park (2 mins). It’s in this area that the Toulouse Walking Tours group sets off (see separate Tripadvisor review).
If you’re feeling adventurous about food, you might want to wander down the side streets behind the Flordia (leading off Place du Capitole) where you can find all sorts of restaurants. If you prefer to stay on the square itself, there’s the Bibent (which used to be an old coach house) and the delightful Parisian style brasserie at Grand Hotel de l'Opera.

Le Capitole is an imposing city hall dominating the main square in Toulouse. Open from 8.30 to 19.00, it offers a series of impressive reception rooms where civic events and weddings take place. The walls and ceilings of all the rooms are lavishly decorated with artwork largely from the late 19th century by local artists, showing events from Toulouse history. Admission is free. Before entering the Capitole, visit the Tourist Information office situated in the adjacent Donjon building (with the tall elaborate tower), where the staff are extremely helpful and provide a free city map.
Don’t miss this imposing building in the centre of Toulouse. The main entrance to the Capitole is under the archway on the left when leaving the main square.
