On a Sunday, we left Paris at 11am on the train to Versailles and stopped here first for picnic supplies before renting bikes at the Queen's gate and riding to the Grand Canal for lunch before entering the gardens and Chateau. It was a magical day.
My daughter loved the outdoor markets in France and this one did not disappoint. We got crepes and produce for our picnic. We needed to pay in cash and use a little French. I find the hubbub exciting but it could seen a little overwhelming if you aren't used to anything but a quiet grocery store.

I barely recognised this lovely building after the great stone cleaning etc. So much nicer to see as original and not transformed into some more modern day requirement

Shopping a market is one of my most favorite things to do while traveling, this market tops my list and makes me want to buy a flat just to shop here all the time!

This is a fun place to hang out with a lot of restaurants to choose from. Had dinner there on 3 nights and it was a bit of hit and miss - all good value but quality was decent at best.

I couldn't appreciate why a stop here figured so prominently on the bike tour of Versailles, but once in the market it was obvious that this market simply has an exceptionally high conglomeration of outstanding foods from dozens and dozens of vendors. Bring a bag to carry food for lunch on the grounds of Versailles as well as to take items with you on your travels elsewhere.

Large and interesting market is located on this squere and surronding buildings. Seems little bit expensive, but very tasty :)

On Thursday, we wandered through a clothing market and on Friday it was food - very good fruits and vegetables!

My family and I went to the Market before we went to the Versailles Palace. The summer fruit was so delicious. The strawberries were so sweet & red all of the way through, it felt like it was the first time we ever ate a strawberry in our lives. It was during the summer heatwave. We purchased some items from a Sausage stand owned by Karine & Bruno. I needed a taxi because it was just too far for my Mother to walk to the palace because of the heat. Bruno flagged down a car and his friend Isabelle drove us over there. Super nice people! For the best Sausage, please stop by Karine & Bruno’s stand. Great Market!

This is an open market in Versailles. Normally the stalls/shops are more on Saturday and Wednesday. You find clothings, cosmetics, accessories, household items, shoes, travel bags, handbags etc.... I enjoyed very much. A good shopping experience for a low/medium end. There is a nearby bus stop. Shall go and experience if you are going to Versailles area.

This market in Versailles is loaded with beautiful food inside and outside the building. You name it - it is sold there. Some souvenirs, too.

Will the market be there on Wednesday the 15th of August (bank holiday)
What is best? Visit Versailles first, then grab some lunch? Or grab lunch in the morning and eat it somewhere in Versailles?

No I'm afraid the full market day is on Fridays only. I don't know if the covered market is open for the rest of the week. Perhaps there is a tourist office in Versailles which could better answer your question. It would be worth the effort.

I was wondering if you saw any loose flowers for sale (not arranged) at the market. We will be there in April next year and was wondering what we might be able to find.

Yes, you can find loose flowers, like a bunch of roses, tulips or carnation, for instance. A bunch is generally 10 individual blooms. There might also be individual roses on offer.
There is also the possibility of going to the flower market on avenue de Saint Cloud, a 5 minute walk from the Place du Marché Notre Dame. Market and flower market are held on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
April is high season for tulips.

We will be coming on our first visit to France during the Christmas week of 2015. We are staying in an apartment right on the square. Are there still the same days and hours for the market and restaurants during that week (Dec. 20 - 27)? Anything special for the holiday?
