Queen Maeves Trail, Knocknarea

It was quite an easy climb and the lovely weather was an icing to the cake. The view from half the climb is just super amazing. On one side you get to see the pretty, blue waters of the Strandhill beach while the other side gives a glimpse of the spectacular benbulben. Absolutely worth the climb.

Thoroughly enjoyable

A lovely climb with stunning views on the descent. We walked from the Rugby Club up to Queen Maeve’s tomb. It’s a relatively easy walk with lots of boardwalk sections and paths through forests. Lovely views of the sea and Strandhill Airport.

Our google maps originally brought us to a different car park, which would have been a longer hike (approx. 3 hours) which we were not in the market for! We went to Grange Car park, which is the most straight forward way to Queen Maebh’s tomb. It is steep at particular parts, but it is very doable. I would be of moderate Fitness, and needed to take a breathe once or twice on the way up, but it’s very doable, and it’s a great sense of accomplishment (for a non-hiker like me) when you get to the top. There was people of various abilities there. I was initially surprised to see such young kids, and while they did work up a sweat, many of them basically flew up the hills! Annoyingly there was 2 people sitting down on the latter part of the tomb rocks having lunch. They sat themselves into the mound at the bottom, and I just found it so inconsiderate, as they were technically Sitting into part of the tomb. I know to the eye it’s a pile of rocks, but the first view of the tomb was spoiled by these two numpties! Similarly to another review, just ‘don’t be that guy’! Even if they had gone around the back it wouldn’t have been as bad; or on a big isolated stone away from the Cairn, or on the grass!
Anyway, it’s worth the little trek for sure, and would recommend, particularly for those that would not have the best fitness level, but are up for the challenge!

Don’t be the idiot

Knocknarea is a beautiful way to spend a few hours. Go early to ensure a parking space and enjoy the walk up. It’s steep enough but manageable for both young and old. The cairn at the top, the legendary burial place of Queen Maebh, the bull thief is a sight to behold. A significant figure in Irish folklore, and an ancient tomb, it is clearly marked that it should not be climbed. However when we were there at least two separate people felt the need to ignore the signs and disrespect this cultural monument. The first person was a man in his forties who was doing an ultra-run challenge. He videos himself on top and became abusive with his faux Dublin south side accent to those who asked him to come down. The second was a woman in her late twenties, who decided to throw stones off the top! Both idiots. Plenty of teenagers on the top were dismayed at the two idiots and asked them to come down.
There a number of short paths on the top which are well worth exploring. They offer breathtaking views across Connacht and Ulster. Take your time and enjoy it, then treat yourself to an ice cream in Strandhill and look up to where you were - breathtaking. But don’t be the idiot!

Breathtaking views.

Myself and my hubbie and two boys did this amazing climb this week and it was just stunning. We were blessed with a scorcher of a day and took our time to enjoy the hike up. This walk is do able for everyone really of a moderate fitness. We got to the top in 29 mins with rest stops along the way. It was so worth the climb. The history of the cairn and tombs is fantastic but the 360° views were just breathtaking. This is a special place. Make sure to carry a stone up with you to place on the grave for good luck. ( And do not remove any !!! ) Go for it. So worth the bit of effort .

Lovely walk up the old way to Queen Meabh's cairn

Follow the sign posts for Knockrea and they will bring you to the start of the old trail. Hiking boots were useful as the trail was wet and you had to scramble in places.

Hiked up knocknarea today to visit queen maebhs carne. We hiked from the knocknarea side up to the carne then continued down the other side of the mountain overlooking the fabulous atlantic ocean, through the forest and along the loop. It took about 2 hours in total but was so relaxing and the views were spectacular. The carne itself was huge and of course we carried a stone from the bottom of the mountain to add to the carne for good luck. So happy to have finally got to visit this sacred site and to learn more about our ancient history.
