Good beer with friendly service. Would happily revisit. I’d called in with a friend at around 6pm but there were already a few people there, many appeared to be Newcastle fans, gathering before the match that’s was kicking off later, but the atmosphere was friendly none the less.

This pub was part of my life growing up.and now I've lived in York for eleven years and don't get to visit home as much as I'd like,my wife and I decided to pay a visit to my old stomping ground.
It was exactly how I remembered it,the staff behind the bar as friendly and welcoming as ever,I love it here and probably always will

This was such a lovely old pub and I was surprised, it has a decent range of beers. Bit pricier than some other pubs but definitely well worth a visit

A fab selection of beers. Great service from Ryan. Great ambience.
Worth a visit for a feel of Newcastle history. Ryan will happily tell you the story behind the name.

It has been many years since we were last here, after moving away from the area - one of the last “proper pubs” in Newcastle. We knew that the new owners of the Fitzgerald group had taken this one on, and hoped they would make no changes to the very ornate historic décor when it finally re-opened after Covid restrictions. And indeed they haven’t, it is just as it always was. I’ve just read that it is the only North East pub in a new book Great Pubs of England – which features a mere 33 pubs so it has to be special! We called in around 7 pm on a Tuesday in November and it was heaving packed, but as we both need to be able to sit or perch somewhere we decided to try a bit later. We got seats no bother after 8, the beer choice and quality was very good, and we were pleased that an old record player was still going strong.

Lovely old pub near the quayside selling great beer. Interior is unspoilt and locals were friendly. Staff member on the bar could have had a bit more in the way of social skills but perhaps he was having a bad day.

Love this pub, always go when in Newcastle but visited on 8 October around 3.30 and the one Barman who was on had his back to me for first 10 minutes totally unaware of me then when he turned round he served someone who just arrived! Spoke to him about it and he said he was only one on. This is a busy Saturday pm. Really disappointed.

Once again, an excellent experience. Friendly, polite & knowledgeable bar staff thank you Alister. The beer, as usual, is in superb condition (the absence of sparklers is a HUGE bonus).

The bar is a proper bar!! Old school some might say but that’s what I like. Polite staff and knowledgeable regarding their real ales. My recent experience I asked fork something light on the pallet and was pointed to a blonde which didn’t disappoint. I had some sweet chilly peanuts that complimented my selection (my own choice) but the snacks available sounded great. I love an old worksite pub and here the beer is very well kept so anyone who enjoys a good real ale here is the place for you. Enjoy….

This is what I call a proper pub long, dark with wood panelling and serving decent ales. I could have spent a lot longer there tasting the beers. Long may this type of pub continue. Well worth a visit.
