- stevoo69Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom638 contributionsSunday Quayside visitWe had a wee trip out to the Sunday market on Newcastle quayside, definitely not as big as I remember as a kid. Firstly the stalls are mostly fast food outlets not our thing, anyway we enjoyed the walk along the quay and the wonderful bridge's we have in Geordieland. Beautiful bacon sarnie and cuppa in the HUB lower byker just on quayside definitely worth a visit . Nice walk back and quiet beers in the beautiful Crown Pasada, the place has never changed. Cheers the GeordiesVisited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 December 2023
- FuntripsKent, United Kingdom42 contributionsA walk along the TyneA nice stroll to get an overview of this City and to see the familiar bridges that span across the river. There are plenty of landmarks to spot, with lots of bars and restaurants when you need a rest too. Would recommend anytime of year.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 January 2024
- Sherpa0105626679811 contributionsGreat pedestrianised area to spot the sights of the city!Lovely river walk taking in the sights and sounds of the city! The atmosphere totally changes at night with neon lighting and colourful bridges! Some great bars and great places to take photos of the architecture. A must if you visit the city!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 February 2024
- BraindamagedbaronNewark-on-Trent, United Kingdom1,423 contributionsQuay to a great timeWe went to Newcastle for the weekend on a nothing more than a whim really. We fell in love with the city, thought it was a fantastic place. The Quayside in particular is a great place to spend your time. Any time you're in the shadow of the Tyne Bridge is obviously a good time. It's a stunning piece of architecture that still looks as impressive now as it always has. We spent an hour or two just walking by the river and taking in the atmosphere. Loved it, every minute.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024
- SteveBPaignton, United Kingdom1,199 contributionsFabulous CityWe stayed in a local hotel and found the staff there as friendly and helpful as the people we met out and about. The Waterfront was a great spot but we definitely need to return to explore this city sights and bars/resturant a more as we spent our days on coach trips around Northumbria. A great vibrant city to visit!!!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 June 2024

We like wetherspoons but this place is ridiculous. Couldn't get in the door it was that busy and that was early December, if honest I was shocked just how many people were in there standing due to no room anywhere else. It was so packed that it was 9 to 10 people deep along the whole bar. We just left as it was stupidly over packed and almost on the point of dangerous due to the amount of people crammed in there. The door men were too busy on their phones instead of stopping people going in due to being over crammed already.

Walk.... and walk... and walk! The further you walk the more captivated you'll become by this incredible urban riverfront with its iconic bridges! From the Millennium Bridge to the High Level Bridge to the Swing Bridge - all are different and fascinating. All offer different views of each other and of the River Tyne. Especially recommended is the High Level Bridge. Trains trundle overhead, buses travel alongside within what feels like a huge cage of Victorian ironwork. All of this is a photographer's paradise!

Had no idea what was there apart from a fancy bridge, so had a wonder down and was really pleased we did.
We walked the distance between the 2 outer bridges (running under the one with all the birds nesting to avoid being pooed on) and then headed from there into town.
There were loads of cafes, pubs & restaurants - many with outdoor seating, which was good as it we were experiencing lovely weather. There is a boat trip which we would have loved to have done, but it wasn't running (I assume due to covid restrictions).
Only critisism is that the only toilets we could find were realy out of the way.
It's worth going as great for those who love photography, and it is very sheltered - so even if it is breezy, you won't feel it.

The area beside the River Tyne is very well looked after. There are wide flat pathways for walkers and cyclists, and there are plenty of benches to sit and rest and enjoy the view across the river. The many bridges (Millenium, High Level andTyne Bridge to name only a few) are very photogenic.
It is always busy when we visit, even mid-morning on a week day, but that is part of the bustling atmosphere. There are many hotels, bars and restaurants located right next to the river. So many great choices to eat or have a cocktail nearby.
Walking to the right (inland) from city centre there are several different sculptures and information boards along the way to keep things interesting.
Walking to the left (towards coast) in July there was a brightly painted walkway and an Urban Garden which looked great fun but unfortunately we didn't have time to stop. The Urban Garden had a large area of artificial grass with picnic tables and deckchairs of all sizes from doubled sized for adults down to tiny ones for small children. There was also a giant chess board. It was really nice to see such an effort had been made to brighten up the riverside area.

This place dan be ridiculously busy on some days but normaly is a pretty good watering hole. They offer some good beers at fair prices, typical of the Wetherspoon bars. The outlook is nice, overlooking the Tyne and on a nice day it is great to sit outdoors and enjoy the views of the tyne. There is also a good courtyard with outdoor seating away from the river where you can enjoy your beer away from the breeze of the river.

We enjoyed walking along the quayside to get in our 'steps'; the quayside is enjoyed by joggers alike. The bridges that span the river are majestic and make beautiful photographs, especially when lit up at night. I can imagine that the place comes alive during the warmer weather as the quayside was lined with lots of different eateries; I look forward to returning.

I am 18 and my friend who is 19, went in for a bite to eat and a pint as we are in Newcastle for the weekend. We came in and ordered our food and drinks online, a girl, probably about my age came with our drinks and asked for ID. i handed her my provisional and not only did she snatch it off me, she also seemed to have a negative attitude towards me and my friend even though we were being polite. My friend has a young scot PASS card and it is a LEGAL identification ensuring her age is verified. she then explained that she couldn’t take this even though nowhere else has ever had this problem, i know this is valid because when i used to only have that identification. she went to take the drinks away and took mine even though she said my ID was valid. I asked her for my drink back as of course I could have mine. She looked at me and disgust and took the other drink away, she said she spoke to her manager about it and she couldn’t take it although we also had a picture of the exact same picture and full name on her passport that she had left at home (she’s accident prone) and said she couldn’t take it, I understand that if for whatever their own policy’s were they couldn’t accept it but there was NO need for the attitude that she gave off, she also didn’t take the multiple plates away from our table, so i went back down to ask them if i could get someone to get the plates when they had a second. The girl was looking at me as if i was speaking another language fair enough im Scottish but it was more of a rude expression than anything. Didn’t get my refund for the drink i got my friend and the food was not nice anyway. thankfully won’t have the chance to be back but don’t recommend especially if you dislike people speaking to you rudely for no reason. The other staff were kinder but the whole vibes seemed off, as if we were disrupting the restaurant but we were sober and literally hungover we were hardly talking. There were a few lovely faces and nice staff even though i didn’t get their name so i’m not blaming everyone but just no need

Stayed as part of our honeymoon and were lucky enough for it to be a Sunday; when there is a huge open air market running along the quayside. Food stalls, trinkets, souvenirs, art, leatherwork, you name it it’s there and reasonable priced.
Well worth wandering both sides of the quay. My suggestion would be to start at the Millennium Bridge and keep fingers crossed you are lucky enough (as we were) to see this engineering marvel being tilted on its axis to let a ship through.
Head across to the old Flour Mill (now a free to enter art gallery) and make use of the stunning views from up top.
Wander the Gateshead side, keeping one eye on the ground for all the brass plaques to local heroes; stage, film, music, scientists etc etc.
Walk back across the old swing bridge, stop and rest with a chilled drink at one of the quayside bars/pubs.
Wander back to Millennium Bridge and then keep wandering further along to discover some stunning sculptures, art installations and seating areas.
Oh and make sure you return at night to see this whole area and the bridges beautifully lit up.

The meal and the service provided by the waitress was very good. Been there on numerous occasions. We entered the premises and seeing no-one at the bar other than a member of staff pouring drinks we walked towards her and my wife told her we've a table booked for 1 o clock. The woman greeted us in a loud voice, pointing towards the entrance, "Can you wait up there, there is a sign". No please. It was quite embarrassing as people dining looked up.
Yes there was a sign which we didn't see. Once there we were met by a pleasant young lady and escorted to our table.
The meal was good. Shame about the welcome.
A birthday treat spoiled.

Lovely Quayside, very happening and bustley. Plenty places to eat and drink. By day, there are interesting and very photogenic architecture and various bridges that only get better by night. (The Millenium Tilt Bridge, the Swing bridge, the high level bridge, and of course The Tyne Bridge, are the ones I remember)
Unfortunately, one thing does let it down, Kittiwakes. You have to run the gauntlet everytime you pass underneath the bridge. Rows of Kittowake backsides hanging over the edge just waiting on an unsuspecting passer by to drop their fowl liquidy bombs on....the stench lingers up the nostrils too. Most unpleasant and something should be done about it. The council need to help business owners protect the buildngs, some of which are ye olde and being destroyed by the endless trail of bird poo .
So, when on the main quayside walkway, go armed, protect yourself from poo when passing under the bridge....

How far is The Quayside from where the cruise ships dock? Is it feasible to walk?
Thanks,
Kim
Written 24 June 2016
Hi Kim !
The Royal Quays Marina where the cruise ships dock is about 10 miles from the Quayside ! So walking is not an option . Google the site ''whatsinport '' and you will get the info. about how to get downtown . Search first for United Kingdom then Newcastle . This site has info. for about 1200 ports of call around the world .
