- Lisa MHenley-on-Thames, United Kingdom13 contributionsatmospheric and fascinating place to visitMy husband and I visited Highgate Cemetary yesterday and I can say, unreservedly, that it is a a fantastic experience. You can only visit the western part of the cemetary with a guide - and rightly so. The place is vast, full of trees, flowers and bushes, the ground is uneven - and the legacy incalculable. I have read some of the negative reviews about Highgate and frankly am astonished. Of course you shouldn't be able to wander round the West cemetary at will. Furthermore, the payment of £12 is worth every penny and only goes on upkeep. There are over 50,000 graves here. It's full of irreplaceable history. Our guide was an extremely knowledgeable and engaging ex-teacher called Peter ( a volunteer) and he told us marvellous stories about the people under and behind the stones. The Egyptian area is particularly fascinating. And the catacombs are scary! The tour is over an hour long and the ticket includes entry to the East cemetary , too, a place that you can visit without a guide . We took lots of photographs and nobody objected, including one of the grave of Karl Marx.I highly recommend it.Visited March 2020Written 7 March 2020
- LokiLaaLaaMilton Keynes, United Kingdom360 contributionsLife, the universe and everythingHighgate is made up of 2 parts; East - can wander around for a small fee and the West - only accessible if on an escorted tour only. Can not prebook the escorted tours at the weekends and sadly, on this occasion, all the tours were sold out so we visited the East. It does seem quite odd to meander around a graveyard but it's touching, interesting and sad, sometimes all at the same time. Sonny Anderson's lego topped and Patrick Caulfield's 'dead' just made me take a step back and think about mortality and Douglas Adams (Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy writer) had a very small and plain headstone almost hidden but visible due to a lovely array of pens proudly protruding from a pot just placed in front. Your visit may remain with you for some time.Visited February 2020Written 11 February 2020
- Julie MHertfordshire, United Kingdom44 contributionsFascinating point of heritageI vIsited for about the 4th time in 25 years and there is always something new to learn, whether it’s new sites uncovered, wildlife or different architecture. The tours vary in content depending on the volunteer guide but are always informative. I recommend booking tours in advance, especially as the Friends of Highgate rarely run tours of the newer side of the cemetery now. You get so much more out of the visit if you book a guide. Clean toilets are available but by the nature of the site, this is not good for anyone with mobility problems. There are great pubs further up the hill if you need a break - and the steep hills will help you burn off excess calories.Visited January 2020Written 8 January 2020

I have lived in London all my life and never ventured into Highgate Cemetery.
Our guide Joe, was well informed and happy to impart some of his fascinating knowledge.
We learned so much about the people buried there and the lives they lead.
He showed us so many things that we could easily have missed had we not had a proper tour. Some people just wander through, and that’s fine however if you really want an experience a guided tour is the way to go.
I always thought that Highgate was a closed cemetery but people have been buried there in the last few years. Douglas Adams , Malcolm Maclaren, to name just a couple as well as Karl Marx and Michael Faraday.
Joe’s knowledge of the symbolism on the graves was also so interesting as well as an in depth knowledge of some of the people buried there.
We would highly recommend.

I am a fan of cemeteries, as they are places of mystery and history, and the ones in London do not disappoint. Our guide, Hahal, brought the grounds to life, so to speak, with her explanations, descriptions and stories. I personally love how some of the graves are in disrepair, vine covered, leaning a bit wearily. The elements have their way in the end, no matter how humans try to contain it.

Excellent tour by very knowledgeable and engaging guide. Inspired me to look up more of the history. You get to go inside areas that wouldn’t be open to general public.

Highgate Cemetery, particularly the older western section is amazingly atmospheric. We joined one of the tours of the west side led by Ben and learnt a lot about the cemetery, the Victorian funeral customs and the symbols which can be found on so many of the beautiful headstones. We heard about some of the famous and infamous people who are buried there and got to walk through the catacombs. It was a fantastic tour, around 75 minutes of tramping around. Thank you Ben!

Wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much. Julia, our tour guide really made it. She spoke loud enough for all to hear and clearly. She was really engaging, and everything she told us was super interesting. She answered all questions well.
I would recommend doing the tour as you get so much more out of it and you get to visit the catacombs.

Sorry no. It’s just small pathways but if you need help with mobility one of the volunteers might take you in their golf cart

Pues es mejor sacarla por la web para la visita guiada porque tiene cupo limitado.los guÃas son voluntarios y muy entregados.no suspenden si llueve, o sea que es conveniente mirar las previsiones e ir preparado para la lluvia

How long do you reckon you need comfortably to look around Highgate cemetery?

The tour of the west side itself (which you shouldn’t miss) will take about 1.5 hours. Then your own viewing of the east side, which is just as big, is of course up to you. I’d say at least hour, depending on how you usually contemplate yourself through cemeteries. And if you are tubing it, you’ll need to walk up a fairly hefty hill. It isn’t super far, but will take you 15-20 minutes to walk. And then a lovely 10 minute stroll through a park at the top just to get to the cemetery gates. Driving of course will be different. But in foot, if you through in a coffee or a beer into your post-itinerary it’ll take you even longer. First tour on Sat was 10 am if I remember correctly and I wasn’t back at the tube station till 1:30. All being said, if you have the time, absolutely do it. It is a fascinating look at Victorian stones, and our tour guide was SUPER informative. Hope that is helpful. Cheers.

I am trying to decide whether to book the 11am tour or the 1:45pm tour. How long did you spend there? The sun sets at 4:30pm when we will be going in January and I want to make sure we have enough time?

I would book the earlier tour - then you will have lots of time to explore the East Cemetery too!

Hi. I booked an evening guided tour for the West Cemetery, I know it takes about 70 minutes. Since I’d like to visit the East Cemetery as well first, could you please tell me how long it takes to have a walk around the East side?
I know it depends on you, but just to have an idea?
Thanks a lot!

You can easily cover the east side in 30-45 minutes, it is a lot smaller and more modern. There are some iconic graves of importance, but so much of an architectural significance. There is a very useful map at the gate showing the historical people buried there.

The cemetery is divided into East and West sections. The East section is open to the public, but also offers occasional guided tours. The West section is ONLY open via a guided tour conducted by an official Highgate volunteer. You can book these tours via the website or at the onsite ticket office. We took the West section guided tour and it's definitely worth the time and cost.

I believe so, though if you speak to someone at the gate, I would imagine they'd be accommodating. The price to ender the East side is around 4-8 pounds, from what I recall.

I will be going on the guided tour in the morning and having a look around the other cemetery in the afternoon. Is there somewhere handy to get a cup of tea and a sandwich?
Thanks!

Hello
Although there is often (usually weekends) a coffee cart outside the cemetery, we would recommend that you go up to Highgate Village, or down to the bottom of Swains Lane (about 10 minutes either way), where there are numerous and good options for eating and drinking.
