The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
How to get there

I went to see the Raphael exhibit on a rainy morning in London. It was worth the effort. The exhibit covered the many phases of the artist career and included drawings and sketches as well as paintings. His rondo work was exquisite. Plan on staying at least 90 minutes to two hours. It was absolutely tremendous.

As London has some of the best museums, it's a great choice to have a wonder. Unless art is one of your passions, you could just enter for an hour or two to enjoy. It's always easy to start a conversation about a painting so, who knows who you meet?!!! ☺️

This is a wonderful place to while away a couple of hours. The subjects range from royalty to sportspersons, film stars, engineers, inventors, the list goes on; and there are photographic portraits as well as paintings. Unusually for such places, there is no objection to taking non-flash photos.

I did the virtual tour and it was terrible. I couldn't move, which meant all the portraits were far away (and barely visible). The 'galleries' were just little snip its of the real thing, so I couldn't see all the stuff (even if I could move, which I couldn't, i would still miss loads of portraits). On top of all of that, it was really hard to rotate the view because the rotation was really quick (this made me feel VERY dizzy)! It is terrible, a tech flop. So don't do the virtual tour. Mark my words!

Spent a couple of hours here while waiting to go to the Theatre, it’s spacious light and airy with a maze of rooms depicting portraits of historical figures down the centuries you really need to visit a few times to appreciate what it has to offer and how fortunate we are to be able to visit places like this for free I would just like to see a few more seats or benches so you can sit and really study the paintings

We went here last saturday. The cafe is popular and there is a good selection of drinks and food. We just had a coffee but the cakes looked good! Then we went to the Hockney Exhibition - it's quite small compared to other exhibitions for this price (£20 each approx). We did enjoy it though seeing the drawings of David Hockney through his career. Well curated and nicely organised. No audio guide available but the captions are sufficient to fully explain everything. It's a 1.5 hour trip max. Worth a trip but glad I paid £10 each with my ArtFund pass.

Thank you for you review. I am very happy that you enjoyed your visit and coffee in our cafe. The David Hockney exhibition certainly packs a lot in, and I am glad that you were able to appreciate the art within. I hope that you are keeping safe and well, and that we are able to welcome you again in the very near future. Best wishes,

We're fortunate living close to London that we don't have to assiduously do a 'deep dive' on national treasurers like this.

So we can 'pick and mix' and linger where something captures us and then self edit as we wander around knowing we can come back as and when.

For me, the group painting of first world war generals and naval chiefs drew me in as did in an entirely different way the oil of Ed Sheeran. What to make of that?
