We had read a number of excellent reviews so had high hopes for the British Museum Experience, however we just felt the whole place was lacking any depth of information on British music.
It seems like the whole area is just a few displays, picking selective bands and show a few bits of memorabilia from, but there's so much information that is missing.
There's almost no explanation of how and why the popular types of music changes throughout the decades in Britain, as well as missing out a HUGE number of popular of influential bands/artists. Obviously not all British musicians can be mentioned as that would require a building 100x the size, but It seems the exhibition is more about the 3 or 4 most popular artists or bands in each decade, with a few bits of memorabilia for them. Several genres of music are missing, for example no mention of prog-rock, or more modern grime/garage music.
Plenty of the display cabinets show clothing worn by musicians, but there's no images of the musicians wearing the outfits. It's similar with instruments - a musicians guitar on display but no images or videos showing them using it at a venue.
There's very little info given on what made a particular band popular, or information on the state of the UK at the time, politically or economically, which influenced the musicians British people listened to.
Perhaps there should have been a section on the really famous venues around the UK and why they were so popular or how they helped promote and discover new bands. Or on how certain bands pioneered the way modern musicians perform on stage. Or even just more videos of bands performing with their music playing, so people could experience the varieties of genres again.
All in all, it was just a bit disappointing.

Great couple of hours spent here. Seeing some original pieces of equipment / costumes and more.
Interactive pieces, displays, shows and more to look at relieving history through music.
Bought our ticket through virgin experineces which made it more valuable and is valid for 12months which is great.
It's in a great location near the centre / docks.
Staff were very friendly, toilets clean and a cafe onsite too.
Would definitely revisit if there were specific exhibitions on or new items added.

I could have spent all day in this museum, there was so much to look at, read about, and listen to. The museum itself is set out well, and you receive a free audio guide to enhance the experience. At the end of the museum there is a dance room and various instruments to try, great bit of fun at the end.

I could easily have spent all day in this exhibition. So much to look at, read and watch. Loads of interactive displays and videos. Spanning from the 1950s to early 2000s there was something to interest everyone. Will definitely be going back.

Roll through the years and relive your best memories. The highlight for me was the dancing booth at the end. Go when it is quiet (Winter) and allow yourself enough time to fully enjoy it.

Brilliant morning out with the kids. The exhibition is very well laid out and covers lots of types and eras of music. Loved all the original instruments and outfits.

The musical instruments at the end were a nice surprise and great fun.

Had a fantastic time here on tuesday! Lovely warm and friendly welcome on entering, then such a fantastic surprise when opened the entrance door! You didn't know where too look it just blew you mind, with the music just coming from every angle! Couldn't believe i hadn't been before. Very spacious, staff on hand for any questions, could look at all items freely. Then the hands on playing instrument was amazing!

Spent longer than intended it’s so interesting, informative and fun - but be warned you’ll come out feeling your age remembering all those artists, songs and fashion from all those years ago.
Guaranteed to come out singing!

Thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition but thought it overpriced for what was on offer.

It was a great nostalgia trip through the ages of British music but didnt quite cover it all, I saw no mention of Jimmy Summerville, Bronski Beat, Communards for example, nor was ska covered particularly well.

I also understand it was a tribute to British artists, but a lot of overseas musicians influenced the UK scene & should have at least had a mention

Thank you for visit to the British Music Experience, and for taking the time to leave your review. We're glad you enjoyed your visit, though we are sorry to hear that some of your expectations were not met. Please remember that your ticket is valid for 12 months and you can return as many times as you like at no extra charge. We strive to show only the best artefacts from our featured artists to best represent the social and cultural history of British popular music. This does unfortunately mean that some of the artefacts we would like to be able to display are unavailable, and we hesitate to display any item that we feel may not do an artist, or the story of British music justice. There is also a huge amount of digital content in each of our galleries, and the artists you have mentioned are covered within, so when you return, please make sure to check it out. We completely agree that the oversees influence on British artist was monumental, and this is why we heavily feature artists such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Dixie Land influence on British Trad Jazz in the 1940s and we have cabinets dedicated to Bubby Holly and Jimi Hendrix. We also have a Ska/2 Tone cabinet which, along with our digital content talks about how the Windrush generation massively influenced British music. We look forward to seeing you again with your annual pass, and please feel free to speak to any of our Crew if you are unable to find the content you are looking for, as we are always happy to help.
