Really great to wander around the tunnels. My favourite part was seeing the old graffiti from the guards many years ago. Thanks for your great review - glad you enjoyed your visit to Fort Nelson. Exhibits are well presented, interactive, with just enough information (not going into too much 'nerdy' detail). There are wide open spaces for kids to run around in and also dark mysterious tunnels to explore. The cafe looked a little on the expensive side, but hey, the place is free so who cares! I took the guided tour which does cost a fiver but it was probably the best value for a fiver I've had in a very long time. Bubbly and enthusiastic tour guide Sarah probably knows more about the history of the place than the guide book does - I'd happily (and probably will) re visit just for the 'Sarah' experience! Amazing place. Thanks so much for your fantastic review - we were delighted to read it and will pass it onto our staff - especially our wonderful Sarah! - MarcusHurleyCalne, United Kingdom10,816 contributionsWonderful afternoon visitAs three aged adults we found this an amazing place and had a wonderful visit. If you're local and have a young family it must be bliss as there is so much to do here and entry is free so you can visit a different area each time. The fort is one of Palmerston's Follies, built in the mid nineteenth century as a defence against possible French attack. It is largely underground and has various batteries and galleries to cover both sea approaches to Portsmouth and land access to the fort itself. The fort is now run by the Royal Armouries and has displays of artillery from the twelfth century to the Cold War. The biggest exhibit has to be an 18" railgun (excluding the Supergun from the Iraq war that was never actually fired) and there are a variety of pieces both indoors and outdoors. Western ones, certainly after the eighteenth century, tended to be very plain and functional but some of the eastern ones are real works of art. There are also displays on Victorian barrack life as well as the building of the forts around Portsmouth. There are tunnels - surprisingly deep - that you can walk down for visits to the galleries defending the fort as well as rooftop batteries. We spent about 3 hours here and could probably return in a few months and do the same again. The cafe was a nice place to sit and reflect on what we'd seen after our visit.Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're glad you enjoyed your visit to Fort Nelson. - Paul S26 contributionsWell worth a visit!Been here twice now. Entrance is free, but you are asked to pay just £3 for the close car park. Staff are very friendly and also knowledgeable. It's quite a large site so allow yourself a good 4 hours to get around slowly. Lots of steps and steep slopes to negotiate so may not be suitable for those of us who are less able to get about. An amazing example of Victorian engineering. Plenty on display to see and watch. Very many Guns / Cannons on display. I couldn't help but feel that there are a lot of rooms / areas that are not open to the public, but would be amazing to see if this place had a little more money to spend? Food and drink in the Cafe are also very reasonably priced. Thanks for your lovely review - glad you enjoyed your visit to Fort Nelson. I'll pass your great comments onto our staff. Fort Nelson is part of Royal Armouries and home to the national collection of artillery. The site is Government funded, which is why we are free to enter. Keeping a Victorian fort maintained is costly and our main priority is always keeping our visitors safe whilst on site. We hope to welcome you back to Fort Nelson again soon.Written 10 June 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 June 2024
- LimerickguyNHLimerick, Ireland136 contributionsExcellent museum and fortWell worth visiting for both the fort and the excellent exhibitions. An amazing collection of cannons from across the world and across the ages. A lot to see so it takes a couple of hours to take it all in. The tunnel is an interesting experience and ultimately leads to the courtyard where you’ll see a massive rail cannon along with other displays. Very pleasant staff, convenient parking (£3) with free entry to the fort. Also a short drive to Portchester Castle so possible to visit two excellent locations in one day. Thanks for your wonderful review - glad you enjoyed your visit to Fort Nelson. - Djl2k9Ebbw Vale, United Kingdom31 contributionsA great place on a hot dayFort Nelson is a must visit if staying Hampshire. It’s free to enter but you have to pay £3 to park. It’s really worth it as there’s so much to see for all ages and for military and non military nerds. A spacious cafe with great prices, a lot cheaper than other attractions cafes in the area. A well stocked giftshop, plenty of toilet facilities and disabled access. I highly recommend paying five pound to take a guided tour around the site. It compliments your self guided experience. We were lucky to be taken around by Gemma who was so knowledgeable and you could tell she had a real enthusiasm for her job.Myself and my friend were the only ones on the tour so it was more like a private tour. All the staff I spoke too from the cafe to the gift shop were so friendly and chatty. It’s great to see such enthusiastic staff as it totally makes the experience. I hope this review gets passed onto the staff to say thankyou for a enjoyable dayThank you for your fantastic review - we're glad you enjoyed your visit to Fort Nelson. - Anne C113 contributionsA beary good visit to Fort NelsonIt’s Neville the Bear here reporting in after my superb visit to Fort Nelson today. I had a lot of fun exploring the tunnels and looking at all the big guns on display. The staff were very welcoming to us bears. It’s a very informative museum and excellent for a family day out as it’s free entry (just £3 to park the car). The only thing I would say that could be improved is the selection of cakes in the cafe. Us bears do tend to get a bit peckish and there wasn’t much choice. Other than that I would thoroughly recommend.Glad you enjoyed your visit to Fort Nelson - please do pop back and visit the fort again soon!Written 22 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 July 2024
- elmhurst37Southampton, United Kingdom76 contributionsEast Tunnels VisitHad the pleasure of a guided tour of the East Tunnels at Fort Nelson. Bought tickets via Eventbrite and went on the hour long tour of the tunnels. Two very informative guides showed us this area of the fort that’s normally closed to the public The tunnels are unrestored and are an interesting view of what most of the hidden areas of the fort must look like. Some of the areas are uneven underfoot and only part of the tunnel would be accessible to wheelchair users. Definitely recommended.Thank you for your lovely review - glad you enjoyed the East Tunnel tours. I'll pass on your lovely comments to the guides. Due to current restrictions you have to pre book a time to come visit and hopefully it's only a temporary "fix".
Did that and paid for a parking slot and met by a charming lady and the visit explained. When and where to wear a mask and where the toilets are.
Some of the indoor collections not accessible as deemed not safe but plenty of things to see.
Tis a pity considering the size of the place that more of the outside isn't opened up as 19 acres to explore which isn't strictly true. There is a lot of scope to make a walk on the upper grass banks a lot more interesting.
Some of the signage and information boards during the enforced closure could have been replaced as some are illegible or just not there.
Considering the times we are in, it's still a good place to visit but more could be done.

Don't do what we did and expect to spend two hours and see it all. Only went to two or three galleries and didn't really scratch the surface. Some really interesting guns especially the old ones.
The reasons for building the forts is explained on comprehensive information boards and amusing "cartoons".
We also called in at the excellent cafe for a nice cup of coffee and cake, only blot was the time taken to get the coffee, but it looked as though on a cold February morning at 10:30 there was an unexpected rush.
We didn't go expecting to much, how wrong we were. Arranging the next visit

We enjoyed a great day out here over the October half term with a 13 and 7 year old. We followed the secret agents and spies trail which enabled us to see lots of different areas of the Fort. We really liked the underground section, the kitchen/barracks and finding out about the history of the fort as well as the elaborate designs of the guns in the art of artillery gallery. The working out of the passcode with in-character guides at the end of our trail was fun and the kids enjoyed getting their secret agent cards from the locked box.
We took our own picnic with us, there were plenty of spots to eat and we ended up sitting at a table in the artillery hall. We used the cafe at the end to get a cake and some drinks which was all good.
It really surpassed my expectations and being that entry was completely free (although there is a charge for the car park) it’s well worth a visit.

The museum itself was amazing and really interesting, the staff and customer service however were awful, just because there was 8 of us and are all aged 19-21 we were followed continuously but we didn’t say anything until we were leaving and at the gift shop looking around and we were told we can’t touch anything unless we buy it so we respected that and waited by the door for 3 of our friends. We were then told by the desk staff ‘Julia’ that we were disrespectful and running around like lunatics and breaking stuff when in fact the only part that we ran was the stairs and 100% did not break anything. She refused to give us her name and swore at us numerous times to which was very inappropriate. we looked on the receipt to get her name but we were made to feel very unwelcome and won’t be visiting again.

We visited Fort Nelson during our stay in Portsmouth. Entrance is Free and we only had to pay a Parking Charge of £3.00, which is very cheap considering that it is home to the amazing Royal Armouries National Collection of Artillery. There are over 700 pieces from across the world on display, some of which are beautifully decorated.
There is a Reception with a small Cafe where Visitors can obtain refreshments.
Fort Nelson is a must visit Site!

For a free afternoon out you really cannot beat Fort Nelson, I've paid £20 admission to see places with less than a quarter of what Fort Nelson has to offer.
Exhibits are well presented, interactive, with just enough information (not going into too much 'nerdy' detail). There are wide open spaces for kids to run around in and also dark mysterious tunnels to explore. Being on top of Portsdown Hill also means that the views over Portsmouth and the Solent are stunning, the views to the front of the fort over open countryside aren't bad either.

This is a well curated and beautiful collection of armaments from bygone years to more recent acquisitions. The armouries display mortars and guns from the time of the East India Company and that of Maharaja Ranjit Singh as also Chinese and Russian guns/armaments. Images from Falklands at forty years were so beautifully rendered.
The displays are well done and labelled clearly too with just enough of a brief history against each item. There is plenty to see, both overground and underground. It gives one a lovely idea of the logic that went into creation of this fortification for Portsmouth, even though it was finally not needed, thank God! It has been called Palmerston’s Folly, whereas it was a sign of Palmerston’s Foresight.
Re-creations of the kitchen and facilities at the time give one an amazing idea of what went on all those years ago.
And all that history is provided with free entry. There is. £3 parking fee, to be paid at the front desk. On a Sunday afternoon there were quite a few visitors but not huge crowds - which allowed one to enjoy the display in the quiet ambience without feeling rushed.

I feel compelled to review as I cannot believe that one particular reviewer moaned about the £3 parking charge when this fantastic venue is FREE ENTRY! Im shocked beyong belief that it is free to be honest, as its such a fabulous piece of history. I've been several times with my 3 children, a teen and 9 year old twin girls. It's such an interesting historical place with friendly staff. If you come on a sunny day bring a picnic as its a great spot. It's very atmospheric here and very well maintained. I honestly would highly recommend it. P.s.........the car park is literally a 20 second walk from the entrance!

Weather wasn’t great for our visit but it didn’t stop us enjoying our time. Some great things to see and all staff were friendly and very informative! Would recommend the 20 minute tour they do, which is more an information talk not a guided tour but learnt several things. The artillery selection is amazing as well as all the other items on display. Great for a visit for all ages, my 11 year old loved it!

Hi - many thanks for your question. The museum itself is free admission, however we have had to invest heavily in our car parking facilities to cope with the demand for 'Poppies: Wave'! Therefore there is currently a £3.00 car parking charge if you do use the car park on site. Hope to see you soon!

Hello and thanks for the question! We have just completed some substantial improvements to our grass overflow car park to allow as many visitors to visit us during the summer months as possible. Due to that work we are currently charging a £3.00 car parking fee for all car parking including blue badge holders. However admission to the museum is absolutely free and that includes (until June 24th) the installation of 'Poppies Wave'. The car park does get very busy at the moment so my suggestion, if you are able to, would be to visit mid-week and either arrive as we open at 10.00 - or perhaps after 14.30 (we close at 17.00). That would help you avoid the rush! Many thanks

Many thanks to all for the responses above! My apologies for the delay in replying myself. Being a Victorian Fort it is fair to say that the level of accessibility is not how we would ideally like it to be. Having said that whilst some areas are inaccessible most areas can be accessed and I like to think that our staff will assist in any way possible to facilitate your visit. Some gallery spaces are accessible but narrow however most chairs/buggies seem to be able to gain access. The café is situated in a modern visitor centre where access has obviously been factored into the design. I do hope you visit and look forward to seeing you! Nigel
